I guess “officially” escaped and survived is a matter of debate.
One survivor was found and sent back. That means he made it — he escaped. But he was caught again and returned to alcatraz.
Other escapees were never officially found according to the Wikipedia article. They could have died, or maybe they made it.

12 daysI suppose to understand this we’d need to know how many inmates have officially escaped and survived from other contemporary prisons. Was it common in the 20th century for that to happen?

While that would put things in perspective, Alcatraz is an island surrounded by fairly treacherous water. That’s a big part of the “and survived”…
