  • There’s nothing wrong about using randomness to get your creative juices flowing. People have been using card decks, dice, Euclidean rhythms, sample and hold and so on for a long time (Andrew Huang has a lot of examples of tracks where the main instrument, theme and genre are randomly picked). I guess sanitized, corporate slop could be used the same way, as long as the artist is fully in control of the creative process. For me the line stops where slop is used as is, with no human creative input.

  • Are you using Spotify ?

    Because they are mainly known for 2 things:

    • they are nazi cunts who platform nazi cunts and play ads for nazi cunts
    • they flood their library with slop as a way to funnel money to themselves rather than to legitimate artists.

    I’m not aware of a streaming service completely free of slop, but I know some like Qobuz are actively detecting and removing it.

WipEout 2097 was my first WipEout. Its soundtrack is etched in my memory and is, for me, the greatest videogame soundtrack ever. It defined my tastes in music, even when I strayed away from electronic towards metal. But my absolute favorite memories were on Wip3out, especially the Special Edition.

Everything about this game is perfect. It’s incredibly beautiful, fluid and fast for a PS1 game. The classical physics are refined to perfection. The Designer’s Republic have done their best job ever at designing the identity of this game. The soundtrack is great. The tracks are varied and a breath of fresh air after the industrial-design-fest of 2097.

It has the most content of any classic WipEout. 8 new tracks, 8 tracks remade from WipEout and WipEout 2097, 6 prototype tracks including two with a mysterious proto-“Zone” ship, all the classic teams and new ones for varied gameplay…

I fell in love again. I hadn’t touched this game in almost 25 years and I love it as much, if not even more than before. I’ve been a lifelong WipEout fan, I’ve since done and enjoyed them all (except Fusion. Fuck you you ugly-ass bastard), I’ve spent hours on BallisticNG just to scratch that itch. But WipEout 3 Special Edition is and forever will be my love.

  • Slight correction here (because I’ve been obsessed with this game series for the best part of the last 30 years): WipEout only features music from Psygnosis’ in house composer Tim Wright aka CoLD SToRAGE. Left Field, the Chemical Brothers and Orbital appear on the official soundtrack CD but not in the game. Its sequels like WipEout 2097 or Wip3out include in-game licensed music from the likes of the Prodigy, FSoL, Propellerheads or Photek.

I’ve been wanting an F1-style steering wheel for sim racing for ages, but I didn’t want to spend massive amounts of cash on a commercially-built steering wheel that could be great but had loads of features I didn’t care about (especially LEDs and a screen) since I play in VR.

A colleague of mine, who is also into sim racing, built a steering wheel that was better than almost anything you can find from Fanatec/Moza/Thrustmaster/whatevs for around 500€.

So, of course, I decided to buy the same thing build it myself from scratch for the challenge and to save some money. Because I’m an idiot, I guess. I thought it would take me 2-3 weekends. It took 4 months. It’s basically a wheel-shaped mechanical keyboard. It was the biggest non-essential project of my life. I learned a lot, including not getting myself delusional enough to start that kind of project on a whim.
