That makes it look like AI was striving for functionality. But they are bullshit machines

There are genuinely good use cases for them, just not what the hype machine has been driving

              This.

Using Machine Learning to make more reliable cancer diagnosis tools? Based and GOATed.

Using LLM’s to replace your customer service department? Deserving of a high five, in the face, with a rake.

Agreed on the customer service department but I don’t mind them replacing automated phone systems and making those painful experiences better. They’re not replacing any jobs in that case.

Depends on what. LLMs, sure, but AI models, called neural networks before, have been in use in a lot of physics simulations for a long time. At its base, it’s a huge number cruncher. How you crunch the numbers makes rhe difference.

Indeed, I meant mostly LLMs, but also image generating AIs. I don’t know of they have much in common in the way they work, but what is commonly described as generative AI. They are responsible for A) the hype and B) the horrible bullshit, mayhem and destruction being visited on the world ever since their spread.

Yeah the corporate bs has really hampered any practical use of these algorithms.

Totally false - maybe in some respects, but saying there’s “no practical use” is indefensible.

I said “hampered any practical use” not “no practical use” maybe I should have left out the “any” but I never said absolutes, hampered means it’s been made difficult.

clearly @MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world consumes too much LLM content. their reading comprehension seems abysmal.

Apparently generating healthy recipes is “corporate bullshit”.

Or maybe buzzwords are the only thing people care about here.

apparently AI has been a defined product that is used to describe solutions that are both intelligent and artificial for the past 40 years.

apparently AI has been used to ensure that commercial airlines maintain horizontal flight even when there is no pilot.

apparently AI has been used to determine where mechanical stress occurs on 3D models based on the material and environmental factors, leading to safer products.

but yeah no, go ahead and liken AI to an unintelligible LLM because “AI” totally needs to make recipes that include glue, sewer water, and cat shit.

I think you may have eaten a bit too much of the “AI” bullshit.

They are bullshit. I agree with you

Spoken like someone who hasn’t used them. They can be wrong and require care and thought when being used but calling them “bullshit machines” is just lazy and inaccurate.

I cannot recommend this paper enough. LLMs produce a large amount of bullshit. Also, it’s been clarified that they can never be made to stop the bullshit and only produce truthful output - because the concept of truthfulness is not a part of the way they work. https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.11817 https://arxiv.org/html/2409.05746v1

Today, when people talk about “AI” (a term with no clearly defined meaning, unfortunately), most of them mean LLMs most of the time. But when discussing “AI”, (or making memes about it) we would ideally specify that explicitly…
