I think they had AI doing the banning reddit-wide, this is just for subreddit specific moderation? I think? I dunno, I dont care enough to find out lol.
I’ve been suspended from reddit like 8 times, every single one of them was a AI decision and every single one of them was a extremely obvious joke, for example, one of the jokes was about me running with scissors, the bot decided that was threatening someone with violence… So I guess reddit users will just see more of that from now on. Not sure if it matters much though, 90% of the comments are the same stupid jokes from 10 years ago anyway, they’ll just get a bit more bland and boring.

Pretty much. The implied plan is that they want to replace the keyword/rule-based automatic moderation system moderators have access to with LLM-based automation.
So if you had a subreddit that banned all use of the letter e, you could whack a rule up to remove according to criteria
.*[eE].*which would have it remove all instances of the letter e.The new system supposedly replaces it with a prompt-based system, where all messages run through an LLM, and you write out a prompt informing it what it should remove (“remove all messages containing the letter e”).
I got a lot of joy from r/fifthglyph, in a long past hour. It was so much fun to find ways to say things, without that ubiquitous symbol.
100%, that’s why people are always banned completely randomly. This is just press to convince people to buy more stonks.

Can it actually be worse than the human mods? They’ve set the bar pretty low.
Human mods will typically actually tell you why you were banned, and might even entertain a conversation about it.
These days most platforms just run it through the AI and it will just ban people completely randomly. If there even is a method to protest it is always rejected.

Not a bad idea… except they already IPOd and you inject AI into everything to wow angel investors, retail investors are less susceptible to this particular type of bullshit and index funds (reddit on russell 1000) are immune altogether. I suppose there are still wall street wealth manager types who might fall for it while playing with someone else’s money

Every once in a while I go back to Reddit. I just had my third account permabanned yesterday actually because it seems I have too strong options on what we should do with ICE.
But I digress. Seeing this is a good reminder why I need to stay TF away from that shitshow platform. Uninstalled … again

Pretty soon, humans won’t have to run, or use, Reddit at all. Imagine the efficiency!
Honestly AI has been used for moderation for decades. The newer models will be quite effective. It could be very useful for limiting lower effort spam. Sure dedicated spammers will figure it out and get by it but as the models get better that will get harder.
Of course like every use of probabilistic technology like AI it should still go to human review. We shouldn’t be shadowbanning people because computer said no. But holding suspicious posts in a review queue for the moderators seems quite reasonable (much like they already do with their current systems).
Honestly this sounds more like an investor update showing how innovative we are using modern technology and how it is going to really improve the platform and stonks will go up up up than any meaningful change to their current moderation systems.
