Windows 11 Weather app consumes up to 1.6GB of RAM
*Laughs in Linux laptop with 2GB of total RAM*
- Kekzkrieger@feddit.orgEnglish13 days
Why does anyone need an ‘app’ when you could just use a Bookmark to your browser.
I am so sick of everything turning into an app, most things can be handled by a website be that on mobile or pc.

Why go to a site if I can embed it in a dashboard tho?
not a Microsoft dashboard of any kind, but in HA or as a kde background widget…

I work in the field. I really liked the weather tile from Windows8/10 because my computer often would tell me at a glance if the weather was going to turn nasty. That was handy.

It’s more fun to have free version of copilot build you a webpage for the weather with just the graphs, numbers and features you prefer, with outrageous styling.

13 daysI have a python weather app on my linux desktop using 37mb. 1.6gb seems a tad excessive.

Open web browser -> enter url -> wttr.in/nameofyourcity
Like wttr.in/chicago
Quick and easy. No bullshit.
Work well with curl in a terminal.
- brb@sh.itjust.worksEnglish13 days
Don’t know where it’s pulling the data but it’s definitely not accurate for the couple cities I tested.
- rayf@lemmy.zipEnglish13 days
I don’t really know, but since it’s a wrapper for Wego https://github.com/schachmat/wego I think it use one of the data source used by Wego. I think that the best improvement could be to be able to choose our own source.

12 daysSame here, which is a real shame, because I love the simplicity.

😲
I never knew about this one. I use curl ifconfig.io all the time also.

My new favorite website: no ads, no JavaScript, and works with curl.
Thanks for sharing it!

But does it also work in powershell? Haha just kidding. Nobody is using that.
- some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.worldEnglish12 days
But Powershell has curl. … Wait a second… … Takes off mask… Invoke-WebRequest
- village604@adultswim.fanEnglish12 days
Translating bash commands to powershell is actually one thing the Google AI really excels at.
Of course I don’t have it build my scripts, but it’s been useful if the Microsoft documentation doesn’t have enough information about the flags.

You really don’t understand… it is an app to change the weather by overloading the computer. The excess heat helps to predict a hotter weather.
- SomeoneSomewhere@lemmy.nzEnglish13 days
Are you telling me that an Apple weather app still slurps >300MB?
- Billegh@lemmy.worldEnglish13 days
Actually, all that is for the tracking cookies. The actual weather data is never stored. This is how they support such advanced levels of inaccuracy.
- UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.worldEnglish12 days
The weather app is probably using edge aka chrome and they are ram hogs. Event the streaming apps on windows uses edge to get hdr etc

Thank you. This also removed the incredibly obnoxious AI chat on the side that my ad blocker didn’t catch.
