Finally bought a grinder!

Hi!

After lurking for a while, and asking for advice here a couple times, I finally bought a grinder.

It’s a Timemore C2S, I know it’s not the best out there, but I’m coming from an old blade grinder (see pic below).

I got it yesterday and tried it immediately. Of course I made 2 cups to compare with coffee as I’ve been drinking it so far, and the difference is very noticeable.

To sum up the experience very quickly, grinding is pretty fast, pour over is much faster too, clarity is clearly better, and what struck me tastewise was that I could taste the acidity a lot more.

Now I have to try different settings to see what suits me best, but I’m very pleased to so far.

But also I have a question for time more owners: how do you estimate coarseness? The spec mentions “approx 36 levels”, but when I count from the screw fully screwed until it comes off, there are more than 60 clicks. Also the notice mentions that we should not grind between 0 and 6 clicks, but then what’s the purpose of having those clicks?

I have a manual grinder I use at work and it has a similar disclaimer, “don’t use on the lowest / finest settings”

My only guess is they want the grinder to be capable of grinding very finely but that it gets into “use at your own risk” territory. Perhaps their manufacturing tolerances aren’t tight enough to guarantee a fine, espresso-like powder but if you want to try it and it breaks they don’t want to he liable.

This is conjecture, but I suspect the tighter settings are necessary to zero the grinder but produce too many fines to be valuable for the user.

A high quality grinder like this is the second biggest improvement you can make to your coffee, first being grinding fresh at all. You’re going to get flavors from your coffee you can’t get otherwise. Timemore grinders are incredible, they cut corners without sacrificing quality in the cup. Everything in pourover past what you now have, except debatably a powered grinder, offers diminishing returns. I suspect you’ll really enjoy it.

Thanks ! I’ve seen many times that using the proper bottled water helps a great deal too I’ll probably try out of curiosity, and will report here if I do feel a difference.

Ive been using distilled water mixed with a coffee water solution and it’s been great. I’ve found a noticeable improvement to both taste and eliminating scale buildup in my kettle. There’s different brands out there, Third Wave Water is definitely the most popular but any of them are probably going to be good. I’m currently using one simply called CoffeeWater and it works just fine for half the price in my region. If your local grocery store does a distilled bottle trade program, that’s going to be better from a waste perspective, of course.

Awesome job! I’ve got a Timemore S3, which I love. I’m currently looking to get an electric grinder too but I love my S3. I wish you many great coffees in the future.
