Hate this movie trope. Especially for ranged infantry. 300 archers with burning arms holding drawn bows as their commander waits for the first salvo to be point blank.

“Sir, they’ve been in range for 100 yards. We could’ve fired three salvos by now…”

      “HOLD!”

I havent seen this movie in years, but i believe these are two different events. The “HOLD” is when theyre being rushed by the calvary and they have the spears (sharpened tree branches) laying on the ground in front of them. He waits for the horses to get close enough so they can’t stop when all the spears pop up, impaling the horses, and launching their riders into the crowd to be destroyed.

Yes, this original scene was about hiding their spears against oncoming cavalry. I’m not sure of what @saltesc@lemmy.world is referring to but that is entirely something else.

Just the concept of abandoning your line and full on charge into a disorganized brawl with the enemy is a Hollywood myth.

The smart ones have relaxed their arms, he’s always like that and they’d have to keep adjusting their arc as the enemy approached anyway. They can raise, pull and let fly in the time everyone else takes 2 steps, since they aren’t shooting for accuracy until the battle comes right at them

Are there historical cases of archer “squad leaders” quickly adjusting their angle after calling pull and before loose? Genuinely curious, I’ve never really thought about it before

The entire idea of calling pull and loose and all that is a Hollywood thing. Yeah they were probably given commands about when to shoot, but these bows were incredibly difficult to keep drawn.

I always hated that Team Fortress 2 pulled that realism. The Sniper is meant to watch angles for a short while, and yet try to use his badass bow for that, and he’ll eventually lose strength and cause the shot to go wide.

I’m pretty sure there wouldnt be independent pull and lose commands. Traditional bows are drawn and fired in a single motion. It wasn’t until modern compound bows that it was practical to hold a drawn bow.

Honestly me neither, I don’t think historical accuracy was the goal of that movie. So I was just blethering

According to the Factorio dev(s), its anti consumer tactic to put games on sale. Because those who purchased it have wasted their money. This is not my opinion BTW. Lookup why they don’t put the game on sale. In fact, they raised the price twice (at least). That’s super consumer friendly!

Original Early Access price was 20 Dollars. First increase was when it went out of Early Access, and then one or two more to 32. Game became an unexpected phenomenon and sold very well, an increase was not required. It was most likely greed. Compare this to other games prices, which usually decrease over time and offer discounts, even indie games.

I’m happy to just buy one game I really want. As I only get maybe 5 hours a week to game, it takes me a long time to finish anything.

Spent the large part of a decade working on it and earned a whopping 3 Steam reviews. Was already planning to post about it here in hopes that lemmy appreciates local multiplayer party games.
