And in the case of Telegram, if they did that why would anyone sign up for their premium account?
I tried using Telegram and the amount of spam I would receive was annoying, but what was even more annoying was finding out that the ‘Restrict messages from users not in your contacts’ setting is paywalled. Telegram profits off of the spammers on their network.
And then after 2 years they will no longer support it.

So… back to my question: what should they do instead?

That’s true, but sitting in a warehouse is costing someone money and I’m sure they were more than happy to sell the books even if they knew they’d eventually get destroyed.
But the other thing is, what should these companies do instead? They scraped the internet and got skewered for that. They pirated books and got in trouble for that. Now they are legally purchasing books to scan. They can’t donate or sell the books since they’ve effectively copied the book and that would get them into piracy trouble again.

The biggest loss is probably the fact that destroying the physical books removes them from circulation
And these are books that have been sitting in warehouses that haven’t been able to be sold because no one wanted them. They were removed from circulation long ago.

I think you hit the nail with ‘no camera’. Honestly, a camera isn’t needed… if you want a picture, use your phone. If you want a POV image or video, use a Go Pro.
Smart glasses should be a display only (well, maybe speakers too).

It’s also a reasonable number of students who would read the answer before just blindly putting it into the answer sheet.

32 out of the 35 students across two classes simply copied the question, pasted it into a chatbot, then copy and pasted its output into the answer window
So, 3 students proofread the output and removed the offending sentences from their answer?

I don’t know… I kinda like the $5 bill with the astronaut on it.

It was a tradeoff between replaceable RAM or high throughput. For this device they felt the performance was more important than the ability to replace / upgrade RAM.
Is Dainty Damselfly the new Ubuntu release?

The technology isn’t the problem. Believe it or not, LLMs are incredibly capable at a variety of tasks, including coding, curating news articles, writing and reading config files, system administration, note keeping / summarization / evaluation, and a whole lot more. Yes, there are a lot of things that an LLM is not good at, but just because I can’t fly a helicopter doesn’t mean I couldn’t drive you to the airport.
The problem isn’t the technology, it’s the potential for the technology to be completely owned and operated by corporations rather than people.

The Chinese models are being released as open weight models, which are what people who want to run these systems locally are using. By banning them this just means that in the US only corporate models will be available to anyone.

I’ve been using The Cursed Clock from Nine Inch Nails Ghosts: Locust album.
It starts out soft and low, but slowly builds.
I’ve been using this for years and it’s about as perfect of an alarm as I’ve ever found.

This was the one for the Google Home Mini… the fabric on the top was causing some of the devices to constantly record (there is a sensor up there that you could tap to ask a question instead of using the wake word). Once it was discovered Google disabled the tap feature.
I remember hearing about issues with Alexa also constantly recording some years ago, but I don’t recall the specifics of that case enough to be able to easily search for it.

The rumor is that this parasite is what killed Lindsey Graham.
It’s a rumor I’m starting, so pass it along.
Because sometimes in life there are nuances and it is possible to mention one of those topics in a neutral manner, but the absolute hostility held here against anyone who tries to have a conversation beyond “_____ sucks ass!” is exhausting.
