Technology@lemmy.world•‘We created a monster’: companies rein in AI usage as costs strain budgets — Amazon, Walmart and Uber are among early adopters that have introduced caps or discouraged wasteful activityEnglish
4 daysOCR libraries have undoubtedly improved but LLMs are using the same open source libraries and tools available to anyone… there’s few cases where sending the work through general models is worth it for text conversion. Employees just needed a front end to upload, run something like tesseract behind the scenes, and spit out the result. It’s an egregiously stupid use of resources.

5 daysI know a company that burned $100k in tokens after they they let like 50 worker bees using general AI for OCR, simply converting images and PDFs to text.
They didn’t bother to create a skill, or teach the AI how to reuse a shared script so every request resulted in it writing a new python project, pulling libraries, using a frontier model rather than offloading a dumb one etc.
Basically find a business process that happens often and let em at it inefficiently, it’ll happily chew through the budget.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Quartermaster - a native iOS app to control your *arr stack (beta, looking for testers)English
5 daysThe public site is the first impression and introduction of a product, and this one has all sorts of slop signs around it. You can see how that can make someone skeptical to the quality of application. I don’t agree “computers can do it better” - I’d prefer a plain old website that gets to the point over one showing useless graphics, generated text, and non-functional interactions.

5 daysI appreciate the candidness. Hopefully you can understand AI presentation generally implies an AI product, and without source code to audit, it raises some flags. Clarity of where AI is used as you’ve done here helps.

5 daysYou can at least admit the marketing site is AI, yes?
I switched to Qobuz, their playlist migration process from spotify was seamless. However, i’m finding the recommendations and discovery lacking, and there’s not any kind of “radio”. On spotify I would just hit play and let it do its thing with Qobuz I have to be much more deliberate in finding music, when an album or playlist ends it just stops playing and it’s back to searching around for what I want to listen to next.
With all that said it’s still a solid option, their catalog is pretty large, they seem to have a lot more genre diversity, anything lossless sounds great, and their editor curated playlists have introduced me to some good music. It’s worth doing a trial run to see if it’s right for you.
What are you buying?
Groceries, maybe I can swing something during the winter sale.
