Cake day: April 22nd, 2026
  • It works well enough for now. Some things were surprisingly simpler than I expected them to be (e.g. gaming thanks to Heroic Launcher and Steam).

Note for the Linux-curious potentially reading this: I had sufficient experience with Linux Mint and Ubuntu as well as test runs of Arch before committing to it. DO NOT SWITCH DIRECTLY TO ARCH LINUX FROM WINDOWS. Try Mint first (or Bazzite, I hear that one is great for gaming but have yet to try it myself), and preferably using VirtualBox before committing to a switch.

  • I’ve largely stopped actively following news because

    • most of it is stuff we knew already
    • I already find out all that I need to know and more involuntarily through occasional social media visits

I’d like to read summaries of a given week’s news on the world, EU, national, and maybe local level once a week, tho. I’ll check if there’s anything like this for the world and EU scale and report back here if there is.

  • Because social media is where nuance goes to die - and that applies to both MLs and us.

A lot of them overcorrect from falling for capitalist propaganda into falling for USSR propaganda

For example, about North Korea. Claims about it are probably exaggerated to some degree, but I sincerely doubt it’s secretly the success story at least one ML I had the displeasure of talking to seems to believe it to be.

The truth is nuanced. Nuance is hard. Blaming everything on the West is easy.

On the other hand, MLs themselves are also more nuanced than we often give them credit.

Unfortunately, like nuance, communication is also hard. Especially in hot-headed situations like this.

  • Wouldn’t that just make them… PCs?

I forgot to finish my argument earlier - that computers being convenient for gaming is why PC gaming will never fully die. But consoles can still have their hard-core gaming niche by specializing for high perfomance/price ratio and making it easier for devs to make games for them (not even exclusives, just regular ports).

Also, bring back a true physical media option or something. If I’m going to have to download a game/patch, I might as well use a PC.

  • I’ve been playing my favourite kind of cozy point-and-click adventure on PC… Doom Eternal. (The demons are the puzzle and you point and click until it is done.) (Doom 2016 is better, tho - no Marauders, more ammo, more upset Hayden…)

As for phone, I’ve been trying out Google PlayPass and it might be the only Google service I keep using (unless/until I find a non-google alternative). I love no longer seeing ads or microtransactions in games. Some games I tried:

    • Mini Metro (fun subway/tram/train network building game with daily challenges)
    • Monument Valley (puzzle game about impossible architecture, alien geometries, and regret)
    • There Is No Game (looks inside, finds game. False advertising smh my head)
    • Human Resource Machine (great programming puzzle game, terrible IDE)
    • Machinarium (cute robot-themed puzzle game from at least 10, possibly 20 years ago… UI design didn’t age well)
    • INMOST (small horror metroidvania-ish adventure thingy)
