It’s literally called the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. It obviously is a memorial to Lincoln. The National Mall is filled with monuments which are explicitly dedicated to memorializing various figures from history. We’re not debating this!

Actually you haven’t. Under Lincoln’s presidency, the Union went on to nominally outlaw slavery — except as punishment for a crime. The 13th Amendment has been used to keep penal slavery illegal. Lincoln himself did not personally own slaves, but he was absolutely complicit as a President in maintaining the institution of slavery. So if not a literal slave owner, every President, as the figurehead of a massive institution of slavery, is a slaver by any reasonable definition.

I’m sure that’s also not the reason you don’t like it.

The reason I reject the monuments is because I am an outspoken anarchist and is a shining beacon on a hill for everything anarchism identifies as wrong [1] about the world, therefore we shouldn’t celebrate people who lead it. Every other “excuse” is a special case of my disgust for systems of oppression and hierarchy.

Lincoln commanded his soldiers to fight the Confederates to protect another evil: settler colonialism, i.e. the Union. He viewed an undivided as the more stable version of the settler-colonial project.

Every President of voluntarily helmed a white supremacist settler-colonial entity. There are no good Presidents, and there never will be, because Presidents are categorically monsters. Monsters don’t deserve monuments.

The problem is your unrealistic expectations by how you’re making it sound like just making an instance means automatic success of a community by denying the reality of just how active the general community as a whole is.

Sounds like you need to either find or make the community you want to see. Which in general, you can do (but some instances don’t let you make new communities I think), although it’s important to make the community on an instance whose policies are amenable to you.

And then if your community is worth going to, people will come.

You literally only need one person to make an instance: you.

You make it sound like we’re flourishing with millions of active users when we’re realistically seeing only five digit thousands and that’s being generous.

And that’s a problem? Personally, I want to see the Fediverse grow sustainably.

It’s not that simple.

No it actually is that simple to make an instance just for yourself. Actually, the challenge comes about when you grow, because then you have to moderate other users.

Off the top of my head:

1. The device might look ugly on the National Mall.
2. The device might cost about as much, if not more, especially if it’s being run every six hours.

I love the fire, and there’s definitely gonna be a need for some more Luigi’s to carry out those exceptional tasks that don’t benefit from “too many cooks”, but IMO we need the proletarian majority to organize and collaborate to overthrow the system. So we don’t necessarily need a majority of people to actually go out and fight (but we do definitely need some!); we need a majority to collaborate with a sufficient number of people who do carry out violent actions for proletarian emancipation.
