The concerns were raised in a joint statement issued by the UN Working Group on discrimination against women and girls, the Working Group on business and human rights, and the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
It is an error to assume that science is pure, that all research is conducted in a social vacuum, and that “political” means party politics. It is important not to fall into the agnotological trap of thinking that “science” can be divorced from the people conducting the research because all research is conducted with a human in the loop.
This joint statement, launched by a coalition of feminist, human rights and democracy organizations in Europe and beyond, affirms that anti-gender politics, including forms advanced under the label “gender-critical”, is part of a broader anti-rights movement. It highlights the growing use of lawfare to roll back human rights protections and silence scrutiny of anti-rights actors, and calls on human rights institutions, feminist organizations, political parties, trade unions, academic communities and civil society organizations to reject anti-gender politics in all its forms and to stand together in defense of universal human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
