Cake day: April 20th, 2026

President Hakainde Hichilema has taken an early lead in Zambia’s presidential election, securing nearly 59 percent of votes counted in 135 of 226 constituencies. The result puts him on course for a second-term victory, though the final tally is still underway.

Thursday’s election was largely peaceful, but the campaign and counting process were overshadowed by allegations of intimidation, arrests and violence.

The Electoral Commission suspended counting for about six hours on Friday after reports of attacks on polling staff and the alleged theft of marked ballot papers.

  • In theory, you’re right. In practice however, you know as well as I do that population control measures would target the poor disproportionately. So whether it intended to be or not, it would end up being eugenics.

  • It’s not even about efficiency. I suspect that this is easier on her back, because she doesn’t have to keep pace with someone who doesn’t coordinate with her and who makes sudden, unexpected moves that cause her to wrench her back. As someone who has lifted a lot of heavy things in his life, I always find it easier and less painful to move something on my own whenever possible.
