For those of you across the Fediverse who follow our communities:

As you may know, our current host (KNThost) is going out of business. As part of that transition, we are migrating crazypeople.online to new infrastructure. We’ve been working on this in the background for a while, and it’s almost time to finish packing and make the move.

When: Thursday, December 18th @ 16:00 UTC (Subject to change). (Click here for your local time)

Expected Duration: Up to 24 hours.

What you will see: During this window, communication between our server and yours will be cut off.

  • On your home instance: Our communities will likely look like a static archive since no new updates will be coming through.
  • Direct Access: If you try to visit our site directly, it will be completely dark for a short time. It will likely be up and down a few times before the migration is finished, and even after that you might see connection errors for a while as the new DNS records propagate across the web.

Don’t Worry: We aren’t gone. Once we’re fully moved in and the internet updates our address, we’ll be back.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask here.

Hello again All.

I’m happy to announce that crazypeople.online now supports two alternative frontends for browsing Lemmy.

MLMYM is a lot like the old reddit interface that some people really like. You can find it here: https://old.crazypeople.online/

We’re also now running the Voyager frontend which is more mobile focused. It can be found here: https://voyager.crazypeople.online/

As always, please let us know if you run into any problems.

Thanks,
cpo_admin

Requests for account deletion will be honored promptly and result in the purging of your user profile and content from our servers.

4. Prohibited Conduct

The following behaviors are strictly prohibited:

  • Harassment & Abuse: Insulting, demeaning, or targeting individuals publicly or privately is unacceptable. Allegations of harassment should be reported to moderators immediately.

  • Piracy Discussion: Discussions about piracy and links to external content are generally permitted for educational or discussion purposes. However, strictly no copyrighted material may be hosted on our servers. Users must ensure all infringing files remain off-site. We comply with valid takedown requests in accordance with the Finnish Copyright Act.
  • Opt-Out Participation: Users may disengage from discussions at any time. Community and user-specific filters should be utilized instead of engaging in disruptive behavior.

Hello all,

As I’m sure many of you noticed we were down for over an hour. The good news is that we’re back, the server upgrades that were previously delayed are being completed, and things should be more reliable going forward.

I’d like to apologize for not giving notice that this was going to happen. Unfortunately, the last update from our host indicated that the maintenance wasn’t going to happen today. As far as we knew the next attempt at upgrading wasn’t due to happen until the 28th. We’ve brought this up with our host as something that needs to be better communicated going forward. Hopefully the downtime wasn’t too much of an annoyance for anyone.

As always, thank you for your patience and understanding.

Hello again,

We had about half an hour of unplanned downtime this morning, and there have been a few short times over the last few days when the site was down. I’d like to apologize for that as it is not the experience we intend to deliver.

For reasons that are still being investigated, the PostgreSQL servers at our host were overloaded and required manual restarting rather than the automated restart that should’ve happened. We’re expecting some of this problem to be remedied after this weekends maintenance to upgrade to NVME drives on postgres servers. We’re still looking into the problem and talking it over with our host to prevent it from becoming a regular problem now and in the future.

Thanks you for your patience and understanding as we work through these things.

NSFW Content Policy

Purpose and Scope:

This policy governs the handling of Not Safe For Work (NSFW) content across our platform, establishing clear guidelines for both locally hosted and remote content. Our primary objective is to maintain a balanced environment while ensuring responsible content management.

Content Classifications

NSFW Categories:
  1. Locally Prohibited Content
  • Pornographic material in any form
  • Sexually explicit content
  • Content that violates applicable laws or regulations
  1. Locally Allowed Content
  • Adult-themed content not classified as pornographic
  • Content requiring appropriate content warnings
  • Material that may be inappropriate for general viewing

Content Jurisdiction

Local Content

Local content encompasses all material directly hosted on our servers, including:

  • Posts and uploads to our Lemmy instance
  • Images and media stored on our Pict-rs servers
  • User-generated content hosted within our infrastructure

All local content must strictly adhere to this policy’s guidelines. The admin team maintains absolute discretion in determining content appropriateness and reserves the right to remove any material deemed unsuitable.

Remote Content

Remote content refers to material hosted on external instances or third-party platforms. Our policy regarding remote content is as follows:

  • Users may subscribe to remote NSFW communities
  • Direct posting or uploading of NSFW content to remote locations via local accounts is prohibited when such actions would result in media storage on our servers
  • The admin team reserves the right to restrict access to remote content that violates our guidelines

Enforcement Protocol

Violation Response Framework

Our instance employs a graduated response system for policy violations:

  1. Content Removal
  • Immediate removal of violating material
  • Policy reference provided to the user
  • Documentation of the incident
  1. Temporary Suspension
  • Implemented for repeated violations
  • Applied after previous warnings
  • Duration determined by violation severity
  1. Account Termination
  • Reserved for severe or repeated violations
  • Automatic implementation for illegal content
  • Permanent restriction from platform access

Administrative Rights

The administration team reserves the right to:

  • Modify this policy without prior notice
  • Remove any content at their discretion
  • Implement disciplinary actions as deemed necessary
  • Make final determinations on policy interpretation

Implementation

This policy is effective immediately and applies to all existing and future content on the platform. Users are responsible for reviewing and complying with these guidelines.

For questions or clarification regarding this policy, please contact the administration team.

NSFW Content Policy

Purpose and Scope

This policy governs the handling of Not Safe For Work (NSFW) content across our platform. As our infrastructure is located in Finland, this policy adheres to Finnish legislation and European Union regulations while maintaining our specific community standards for acceptable content.

Content Jurisdiction

It is critical to distinguish between content stored on our drives and content viewed from other networks.

1. Local Content (Strictly Moderated)

Local content encompasses all material directly hosted on our servers, including posts, comments, and media uploaded to our Pict-rs instance.

  • Responsibility: You are directly responsible for any content you upload.
  • Storage: This content lives on our hard drives in Finland and is subject to our strictest rules.
2. Remote Content (Federated)

Remote content refers to material hosted on external instances but viewable through our platform via federation.

  • Subscription: Users may subscribe to remote NSFW communities, provided those communities do not host illegal content (CSAM, etc.).
  • Caching vs. Hosting: While the server automatically caches remote media for performance, users are strictly prohibited from manually re-uploading remote NSFW content to our local storage.
  • Blocking: The admin team reserves the right to defederate from (block) instances that systemically host illegal content or fail to moderate CSAM, to protect our infrastructure’s legal standing.

Content Classifications

Based on the jurisdictions above, the following rules apply:

1. Locally Prohibited Content (Zero Tolerance)
  • Illegal Content (Finnish Law): Any material deemed illegal under the Criminal Code of Finland. This strictly includes:
    • Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) - Results in immediate reporting to authorities.
    • Extreme violence or depictions of gross violence.
    • Bestiality or sexual violence.
  • Pornographic Material: Sexually explicit content involving consenting adults. While legal in Finland, we do not host this content on our local infrastructure to maintain server stability and community focus.
2. Locally Allowed Content
  • Adult-Themed Content: Non-explicit discussions or artistic depictions of nudity that do not qualify as pornography.
  • Sensitive Topics: Discussions requiring content warnings (e.g., mental health, politics, war footage for news purposes).
  • NSFW Tagging: All material falling under this category must be appropriately tagged to allow users to filter their feed.

Enforcement Protocol

Violation Response Framework

Our instance employs a graduated response system, though illegal content triggers immediate escalation:

  1. Content Removal

    • Immediate deletion of violating material.
    • Warning issued with reference to the specific policy violated.
  2. Temporary Suspension

    • Implemented for repeated infractions or disregard for NSFW tagging rules.
    • Duration determined by violation severity.
  3. Account Termination & Legal Reporting

    • Standard Termination: For persistent violations of the “No Pornography” rule.
    • Immediate Termination: For posting content illegal under Finnish law (CSAM, extreme violence). Relevant data may be preserved for handover to the Finnish Police (Poliisi) if required by law.

Administrative Rights

The administration team reserves the right to:

  • Modify this policy without prior notice to comply with changing Finnish or EU regulations.
  • Remove any content at their discretion.
  • Implement disciplinary actions as deemed necessary.
  • Make final determinations on policy interpretation.

Implementation

This policy is effective immediately. By using this service, you acknowledge that you understand these definitions and agree to keep our local storage free of prohibited materials.

For questions or clarification regarding this policy, please contact the administration team.

General FAQ

Below you’ll find answers to some of the most commonly asked questions from new Lemmy users. If you don’t see the answers you’re looking for feel free to ask here or start a new post. Updates will be added as needed.

How can I find communities that interest me on Lemmy?
Show Answer

We’ve done our best to get everyone started with the Fediverse by offering some of the most popular communities on Lemmy on our All page, but this is only a tiny fraction of what the fediverse has to offer!

An unfortunate side effect of how federation works is that communities don’t start sharing data until someone from your home instance discovers and subscribes to them. What this means is a lot of the time you won’t be able to easily find communities on other instances if you’re the first one to search for that topic on our instance. Luckily there are lots of tools around the Fediverse to help out!

Lemmyverse is a search engine designed to help people find new communities and instances. They index over 20,000 communities to search through with convenient features like setting your home instance so that all the links you click will open here for easy subscribing.

Community Promo is where new and existing communities let you know they’re looking for people with shared interests. If you’ve started a community be sure to announce it here.

New Communities is a great resource to find out about the newest places or announce a space you’ve created.

Trending Communities offers a daily bot post highlighting a mix of the most popular and up and coming communities.

Communities is another bot post community but this one offers daily links with descriptions for established communities you may not have seen yet.

I subscribed to a community but it doesn’t show anything/looks dead.
Show Answer

There’s a good chance you joined a community on another instance. If you’re the first person from our instance to join it there can be a delay before the content starts showing up. Refresh the page or check back in a few minutes and you should see things starting to come in. Be aware that sometimes this process can take significantly longer if the community isn’t very active.

If you’re seeing older content in a community but nothing new, it’s likely someone else from our instance used to be subscribed there and unsubscribed. If no one locally is subscribed our instance will stop updating the community until someone resubscribes to it. Communities can die out and instances can shut down though so if you aren’t seeing any updates after days or weeks it’s likely the community is no longer active.

I can/can’t see a post or comment from another account that I can’t/can see here. Why?
Show Answer

It could be a number of things but there are a few likely culprits.

Accidentally hiding read posts is one of the most common causes of disappearing content. Please verify you have this setting enabled for your account if you’re unable to see posts you’ve previously interacted with.

Account Settings Sample Image

NSFW and Language settings on your account can completely hide content from you. Make sure you have your settings adjusted appropriately to be able to see the content you are looking for. It’s not uncommon to select every language option to make sure you are seeing everything on Lemmy. The only content we intentionally block is CSAM and spam.

Federation lag can also occur, causing data to be delayed by several minutes or even days between instances. Under normal conditions this shouldn’t happen and should be reported if you notice it. Please provide any supporting data and links when reporting.

Instances can choose to federate or de-federate with one another for any reason. We are federated with all other instances with open federation and only de-federate from instances being used for malicious activities. If another instance can’t see ours or we can’t see them it’s likely no one from our respective instances has subscribed to anything from the other, but you can check the instances list to see if they’re being blocked on our side. Other instances should have a similar link near the bottom of the page on their site. If you believe an instance has been de-federated by mistake don’t hesitate to contact us.

Where is the downvote button?
Show Answer

Our instance has chosen to disable downvotes. If you’re using Lemmy through a browser you won’t see the downvote button at all. If you use a mobile app you may still see the option to downvote but it doesn’t do anything here. To our instance they simply do not exist. What this means is that local and federated content is not subject to attempts at censorship, harassment, or brigading via downvotes. We prefer to let our members decide how to filter their feed through subscriptions and blocks instead of allowing content to be buried by the downvotes of others.
