Anubis rarely ever annoys me (I still prefer it over cloudflare’s Mitm) but this specific visit feels almost vindictive. It used half my CPU cores at full blast for three straight minutes.

It seems to be effective since I can’t really “bypass” it with extensions, so AI crawlers probably can’t either, but damn there really should be an option to complete a manual captcha or email the administrators to complain.

As I’m typing this the challenge is still running xD

Out of respect and an abundance of caution I will not reveal who I am accusing of being an alt. It also doesn’t really help anyone if I invite further harassment to this individual. Please do not try to guess them. It’s likely that they aren’t and I will just delete this post. (Mods, let me know if I need to take this down).

Ok so: Both accounts use long, structured, paragraphs with somewhat of a scholarly tone. Both often use unsolicited hyperlinks for definitions or references in their paragraphs. Both have an interest in Star Trek. Both are knowledgeable and invested in federation, fedi drama, and the lemmy API. They also hold similar positions on the Tesseract situation, with the alt-account holding some positions that obviously sit somewhere in the shade of support for Tesseract or against some of Lemmy’s community. What caught my attention was the (helpful) nuance, but obvious blindness, to Tesseract’s toxicity filter. They also don’t really like leftists nor the purity testing, so that’s another weak link to the developer, though I’ll admit not everyone on Lemmy is a leftist.

I want to point to one example, said directly from the developer:

Long story short, at some point, the Fediverse stopped growing organically and simply became the dumping ground for all of the people too radioactive to be platformed anywhere else in civil society.

I can’t directly quote the alt, but to paraphrase, they also believe the fediverse has stopped growing (rather, declining) and is toxic.

I plotted their 24-hour activity histograms and found some similarities, though not enough to call it more than a coincidence. Though, it’s not great that their accounts were both quiet for 3 months and then both came online at the same time — when Tesseract became a controversy.

spoiler

Sadly, I cannot post more examples of the alt’s comments. However, I wouldn’t even be posting if I wasn’t reasonably suspicious.

“Alt”, if you get called out here, or I am terribly wrong, I sincerely apologize.
