Again, I don’t disagree with you regarding Steam sometimes getting way too gassed up by gamers, and not having any incentive to change because of it. That’s because the bar is so fucking low for the industry as a whole.

But I wouldn’t call it “rent seeking”. They make deals with publishers to have games come to PC instead of being locked into console exclusives, they are making consumer friendly hardware, they are pushing the Linux gaming sphere, and they have actual customer service for their storefront. All of this should be standard in the gaming sphere, but because it isn’t, Valve and Gabe are seen as gods.

While Steam isn’t “doing nothing”, I do think 30% cut of sales for the first $10M is a lot especially for indie and single developers that will never reach this target, and the larger/more known the publisher the easier it will be for them to hit the lesser % of sales tiers (reduced to 20% after $50M, but I can’t remember the in-between tiers atm).

Itch.io, by comparison, takes 10% of sales as a default, but publishers can set it to whatever. Indie devs really should look more to using that as their store if they’re cash strapped, and people should really get their indies off of there if possible.

No, they dumped them and got much nicer and less judgemental people in their lives. Sucks that you won’t experience that type of growth anytime soon if your replies are anything to go by.

Baffles me. and by people I mean, mostly women. Most men think my place is plenty spacious and great.

This is so weird, because I also have anecdotes about lots of women who live in 500sqft studios and love it, and their male partners/friends judge them for not having more space because they can’t stay over or “party” there. My roommate’s ex-boyfriend was like this, and we lived in a 2bed/2.5bath.

But I was so frustrated with the state of “mobile gaming” in the last decade where my options are “touchscreen, cellular brick”, “underpowered, colourful heavy brick” or “powerful, heavy monochrome brick” that “light, foldable, powerful, colourful brick” really seems refreshing to me 😭

I love my Thor! I’ve used it more than my Steam Deck over the past year because it’s more portable and I can play my Steam games on it. The DS really was my favourite form factor from all the gaming devices I own, anyone that’s the same should look into this.

Variety of reasons I believe: anti-poaching, preferring to go by their gamer tag, not really industry standard at the time (Yoko Shimomura for example did a lot of iconic early Capcom stuff but it was credited as “Capcom Music Team”), gaming seen as a “lesser” industry so people didn’t want to be associated with it, corporate egos, anti-doxxing (yes, even back in the day. Gaming was a small industry). It really depends on the country/company etc.

It’s actually gotten to a point where certain older games getting ported are actually entirely credited to the porting team rather than the OG creators. I know the Metroid ports had their OG creator credits removed (not sure if they were patched back in or not), and it was a minor kerfuffle. It’s a topic discussed in game preservation spaces with some frequency.

I wonder if this related to the uptick of the focus on cultural/artistic “taste” I’ve been noticing in the tech sphere (including in this very Wired article).

For context: I had an interview with a tech company that’s a secondary player in the AI sphere, and they asked me about Pierre Bourdieu and my “Pinterest aesthetic preferences” of all things. Very wtf moment.

Also, having a trackpad built into a Gameboy is indeed cool. I don’t have to use the d-pad to parse menus if I don’t want to, I can also use it like a joystick even if it’s probably inferior to the OG controller scheme.
