The astonishing part is how they manage to both be overly heavy-handed on moderation and STILL keep floating a fuckton of racism and other bigotry to the top.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would realistically happen if universal healthcare went into effect in the US and healthcare was no longer tied to jobs?English
7 hours“Months to years” is the exception not the rule in the UK, you’ve been fed bullshit corpo propaganda. I’ve always been able to see a GP within a day, and when I needed some minor physiotherapy it was about two weeks.
The only person I know who’s had to wait more than a couple months was an elderly relative who wanted some quite complicated ankle surgery in order to be more active, and ended up going private - which is just as much an option here as it in the US, only considerably less extortionate since instead of being a cartel they’re competing with free.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft admits 8GB RAM is fine for Windows 11, after years of pushing 16GB as the baselineEnglish
24 hoursYeah we can’t expect them to be able to hire the expertise required for this, it’s not like they made over $1,000,000,000 net income last year or anything. Oh wait…

1 dayMy coworker was making a browser extension recently and noticed that most of Facebook’s frontend code is crazy bullshit designed to make it difficult for scrapers and bots to navigate the DOM.
The saddest part of it is that none of it is particularly effective, it just means they had to write 2 lines of code to grab the fields they wanted instead of 1, so all that’s happened is Meta have made everything worse for everyone and burned an extra kajillion client-side CPU cycles worldwide, for almost no benefit.

1 dayWindows XP was initially only capable of addressing a maximum of 4GB of RAM in its first 4 years of release, and I can’t think of a single damn thing I want from Windows 11 that XP didn’t already give me. How bloated does this bullshit have to be for 8Gb to be the bare minimum?

Games@lemmy.world•Some Retailers Are Refusing to Sell GTA 6 Due to the Lack of a DiscEnglish
2 daysI still can’t find Ultra HD discs in the shops either - it’s easier to find low res DVDs in 2026 than 4k discs even though most TVs sold now are 4k.
I have become convinced that Sony are deliberately sabotaging their own format because Sony Pictures ran the numbers and concluded they’d make more money if everyone had to stream.

Technology@lemmy.world•Tesla Allegedly Showed Cooked Data to Get Full Self-Driving ApprovedEnglish
3 daysThe conventional wisdom is that he’s still a genius but was masterfully playing 4-D chess.
Personally I don’t believe it, I think he genuinely did think he was being a genius and that it was going to happen.

3 daysI can’t believe he doesn’t get more shit for that whole Hyperloop debacle.
The hype around it was a big part of his whole elevation in the media to “Real-life Tony Stark” status. Engineers who called it out as impractical half-baked nonsense were ignored or ridiculed, but now that they’ve been proven correct everyone’s just moved on and forgotten about the whole thing.

The most bonkers court ruling ever was when they allowed Microsoft to pay their huge antitrust fine in Windows licenses for schools and other govt organisations.
They argued that they didn’t really have a monopoly because Linux and Mac existed, and their punishment for illegally abusing what monopoly they did have was… getting their monopoly solidified in all parts of education and government.

4 daysRequire an AI SLOP disclosure.
No advertising bot is going to admit to it. The only people for whom failure to jump this hoop will be a blocker, are legit posters.

Technology@lemmy.world•Study says AI in schools may be doing more harm than goodEnglish
5 daysI’ve been interviewing software engineers for many years, and this was the first year the “AI natives” started graduating and applying for jobs.
Never had such a high rate of people completely unable to write one line of code in a language that appears on their CV, it’s been about 50% in the last few months where I had to end the interview during the warmup question.

I don’t run ad block because they’re showing me ads, I run it because creepy fuckers are trying to collect everything I’ve ever done online and store it forever.
many 45s
All 45s. You punched the hole out yourself if you wanted to use it in a jukebox.

Fuck Joanne Rowling in particular, BUT, I don’t think this particular post is a good example given what it’s actually saying…
