There are many very good series with more serious tone or complex story telling in this thread so I try to suggest two completely different series:
New Amsterdam is, on the first glance, a pretty standard hospital show but has a lot of social commentary and a diverse cast of very lovable characters with overarching storylines and lots of character development. Often it’s kinda cliché but it manages to leave me bawling my eyes out almost every episode.
Virgin River is a romantic story about the inhabitants of a small town in Northern California. It’s also often pretty cliché but has a nice rhythm of “exposing the characters to a problem” -> “drama!” -> “cliffhanger” - > “resolution”.
