I was a lot in 2020 and leading up to 2024 USA election. Somewhere along the way, I accepted that we’re doomed and started focusing more on the things in my day to day life that make me happy. I can’t stop the lunatic behavior of my government or the destructive behavior of the people with all the wealth. If they don’t light the world on fire right under our feet, I’ll die from the horrible shit in our food and groundwater.

Probably already posted because this is a couple of days old, but I only just got around to rewatching Lee Berger’s presentation at Carnegie in 2022. I was super excited after watching this on a livestream[0] because I’m an evolution and history nerd.
These are our cousins. We used to think they (cousins, we didn’t even know about this branch) were so primitive, but we keep finding evidence that they were more like us than we’d thought.
We’re fucked. I told my therapist this. I told our financial planner that I don’t expect us to survive, but we opened the account for my partner to take care of her. We’re gonna destroy ourselves. Will it be on the timeline I expect? Maybe not. But T2 has already proven that things are moving faster than I had anticipated.

My friend was blathering on about Cory Doctorow two decades ago and I knew the name, had maybe read a little bit. I was kind of annoyed how ofter he brought him up. Man did he come out ahead of me on that. This guy articulates the ills of society so well.
Maybe I’m just blessed with a nice life, and I try not to take that for granted, but it does give me that feeling unfortunately.

We got to rent time on one of these that very summer in an arcade-like coffee shop (or something, I was young, I don’t remember) in NYC. Everything was in Japanese, but Mario was running around in an open world and it blew our minds.

Weaken education and make people stupid and unable to think critically. Do you think Ted Cruz (Harvard) was complaining about the Paris Accord because he genuinely didn’t know that it wasn’t Paris-only? His voters are goddamned morons and he knows it. The contempt is sickening, but they see none of it.
I’m doomed. I got a new GP last month. I told her (in front of my partner) that I don’t believe we have a future and I’m going to enjoy the time I’ve got, not make changes I don’t want to make. She didn’t like it, but I think she appreciated that I wasn’t full of bs.
Yeah, but I’m glad we’re not burning electricity on those anymore. Screensavers were fun at the time, but putting the displays to sleep is the better practice.

You’re probably looking for something like phpMyAdmin. A lot of hosting companies offer it (I had to log into my own to look up the name of the software). I would host in a European nation if you could (people love Hetzner; I haven’t used any outside the USA). I believe that’s a relatively save route to data sovereignty and I doubt they’d honor a court order from your country demanding records or access to your data, but you should research carefully and not trust some half-knowledgeable / half-ignorant guy on the internet (me) if you’re putting yourself at risk.
I think people on Lemmy will be genuinely friendly about answering questions if you demonstrate that you’ve put in an honest effort to learn things on your own and don’t ask people to basically do the thinking for you. Unix / Linux / network / server nerds like talking about this stuff and are happy to help each other learn so long as there’s a sense of respecting other people’s time by trying to do things on your own and only asking for expertise because you tried first but got stuck. That’s been my experience, anyway, over the years (big old nerd right here).

Pay for independently-developed software if you care about it continuing to exist. Steal from corporations all you want. But support independent devs (and small teams) to make sure they can keep maintaining the tools you love and rely on. It’s the only way to not get swallowed by the big dogs.
