  • Most consoles made since 2005 can wake from sleep on by turning on a controller.

But PCs cannot since it wasn’t a feature added to them.

However a PC can play older games, not just going back 20 years, but with emulation can play games as far back as games from the 70s.

A PS4/5 can’t do that since unless the developer needs to add support for it, or made a rerelease with their older games. So your PS4 isn’t play Super Mario Sunshine or even Brothers. Let alone the thousands of games which are classified as abandonware.

Which is what makes the steam deck alluring even at its inflated price point.

  • Would I like it to be cheaper. Of course. Are gaming consoles cheaper of course.

But I cant name 1 system or PC, which can waken when a Bluetooth Controller connects to it, and can play every game I own from the last 15 years, and every console game from the last 25 years.

Even Nintendo nickels and dimes you for this privilege, and with a one time purchase I can just remove my consoles and just use a Steam Machine, sign me up.

Not even PlayStation 5 can do what the steam machine does out of the box.

  • I stopped liking with PlayStation after E3 2013. Back then they took a free service PlayStation Network and charged people monthly for the privilege. Let alone how they mishandled the PS Vita and blamed their failure on Cellphone gaming.

I eventually got a PS4 in 2020 @ $200CAD to close out some series which started on PS3. But I never felt the need or want to get anything newer.

  • I got 4 of them. Miyoo A30, an R36s (clone), Anbernic RG28XX and Anbernic RG35XXH

The R36s clone is a scam. Good cpu/GPU for the price, but the buttons and speaker is bad. Add to the fact the software sucks you should avoid.

Miyoo A30, it’s a fine mini console, love the soft touch buttons. Don’t love the lack of RTC (took forever to fix Pokemon Emeralds clock) and the lack of a headphone jack. But when I got it, it was $30 - $40CAD and for that I can’t complain.

Anbernic RG line of handhelds are all the same. Same performance and same compatibility. The 28 is almost the perfect mini system. Headphone jack, enough buttons for up to PS1/GBA games my only gripe is the loud clicky buttons. Not easy to play in a doctors office.

35 has the same issues, loud shoulder buttons but it’s bigger build makes it easier to play more. Since it has 2 analog sticks VB and N64 games are open to play, and while it’s jank even DS games are playable. This is the one I recommend.

My only advice to make these handhelds better.

    1. get custom OS installed. The Stock OS area joke and will not get updates.

    2. get your own roms. Ignoring the fact that what they are doing is piracy, wiping the hardware and putting your own roms in makes your system feel like yours.

    3. find what games you want to play first, Miyoo a30 can’t play PSP but Anbernic can so finding out which emulators your systems needs to run is helpful

  • What I miss about this era of portable gaming was that it was:

    1. Portable

    2. Fun, pocket games had a different design ethos around it. Longer play sessions were allowed since you can play it everywhere. But it never made you feel like you couldn’t put it down since you might have to drop what you were doing to make your next connection. It’s why I think Pokemon has been so successful. Outside of the elite 4, you could pause at any time and moment with no penalties in your game.

My recommendations for unique games for those who want them.

Pixel Junk Monsters - Tower Defence

The Sims 2 - Seriously a fun adventure game in the theme of the Sims.

Patapon 1 or 2 - Rythem adventure game

EveryDay Shooter - Twin stick shooter

This is the support article they are referencing: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=TY9Z4zZ7vgVwLA0b7C

    This is the changes

Third-party game stores (EA, Ubisoft, and GOG) are being removed from the Luna platform.

    For the refund

Can I get a refund for games that I had previously purchased?

All purchases of a-la-carte titles through Luna are final, and we do not accept returns, except as expressly stated in the Digital Products Return Policy. However, you can continue to access your purchased titles through your linked third-party platform account. If you have questions about a specific purchase, please contact Amazon Customer Service.

EDIT: Looks like Amazon Games app might not be included with this, but I not 100% unsure.

Context: I am on a personal agenda to backup all my games myself. In this search I landed on the Open Source Cartridge Reader (OSCR) it was expensive so I held off until a few months ago when I could finally afford it.

When I got it, I also bought every adapter I needed including the Virtual Boy one, which comes as a Kit. I didn’t think it looked bad, which is why I ordered it. But I held off on making since I started getting cold feet.

Today however I got the courage to try and… it was awful. 60 teeny tiny pins needed to be aligned and individually soldered. It was setup so a skilled micro solder could doing the job in an hour or so… it took me 4 hours and scouring the floor finding pins which fell. Let alone unclogging holes which were accidentally soldered.

However after testing my patience and redoing the last step 3-5 times. It works!!!

Now I can play Jack Bros without a VB, and Viper on 3DS is amazing.

Shoutout to Save The Hero Builders. I got everything from them and they were extremely helpful with a noob like me.
