Unfortunately Sony will look at this wording and say “we’ll be happy to charge you tenant fees instead” aka a subscription

Bold of you to think you have rights, plebe! Now pay your subscription and pray I don’t alter the deal again!

You pay owner price. They give you tenant rights.

Fucking bars right there. We should be carrying this around like a motto. This is the next “if buying ain’t owning”.

Isnt steam, epic doing the same? You pay full price but own nothing.

I don’t think that it’s the same because Steam and Epic aren’t the only store available to PC users. They haven’t decided that games aren’t available on disc and there are one or two options where you can purchase DRM free games.

This is Sony, the owner of the platform and the only store available, that is making a decision that will result in players never being able to buy a DRM free game. Not only that but players will only be able to buy games from them unless they intend on allowing other stores onto the platform.

This. Rumor has it that the next Xbox may also go discless, but I wouldn’t be as angry about that because the rumor also has it that the next Xbox will support installing other stores like Steam. Making it no different than a Steam Machine in practice.

No, because your PC isn’t a closed system.

Steam and Epic run on open hardware where people can install it on devices they assembled themselves, and run it on different operating systems.

Difference is open hardware versus an ecosystem that tries to lock down their hardware, prevent installation of unapproved programs, and prevents competing storefronts.

Also once you buy a game you can play it basically forever. I finally upgraded to a PC powerful enough to play Crysis, but I didn’t even need to repurchase it after all these years.

PlayStation store, you often need to rebuy all your games each generation. I remember being really annoyed when I went PS3 -> PS4 with no backwards compatibility. Never bought another console since then, dunno what the situation is like now.

Yeah, decades of compatibility PC games have across hardware over the years is hard for consoles to match.

Even when they have backwards compatibility they are stuck to the performance and resolution cap from the previous gen if the devs didn’t go back to improve it like Red Dead Redemption 2 still being capped at 30. Or Bloodborne.

Objectively to a large extent yes. There’s the family thingy where you can share games with a limited audience in steam but you can’t « re-key » a game to resell a key. That would be a wonderful feature…
