When you do start dealing with insurance you might want to take down the Youtube channel or make the videos private. They’ll use anything they can against you.

Maybe I’m paranoid, but they’re scummy.

My thought was the opposite, I’m documenting everything so they can’t use anything against me. I have nothing to hide. My shit is fucked…

But any advice is appreciated. I’ve certainly never been through anything like this before. If you know something I don’t, please let me know.

Oh definitely keep documenting stuff to offer up as proof if they ask for proof of something. But in my experience with insurance is that they’ll find something to shove blame towards you even in the most clear circumstances.

You’ve nothing to hide, but adjusters are scummy enough they’ll comb your footage to weasel you out of money you’re owed. Document for your own proof, but don’t give them a sandbox to work in.

This. Assuming OP is even covered to begin with. Insurance companies try to get out of paying for anything they think they can get away with.

Most homeowners insurance will not cover flooding, and will say you need separate flood insurance for coverage. If you’re in a flood-prone region, flood insurance is going to be ridiculously expensive, but your municipality may also receive support from the fed (NFIP) for coverage.

But even with coverage, if you try to claim a kitchen appliance in flood damages and, say, it was kept too close to the sink, the insurance company could try to use that as an excuse not to cover it. They’ll say it could been damaged by a source of water unrelated to a flood, that the appliance clearly had a tag saying not to expose it to water yet the owner put it in a negligent place.

Document everything for yourself, but don’t preemptively give the insurance company the excuses they need not to cover things. Let them try to say no to something first and then come back with the receipts.

“Yeah the blender clearly says not to submerge it in water”

                              “The whole house is submerged”

“Clearly that shouldn’t have been done, so we can’t cover it”

Private insurance does not cover floods. The feds underwrite flood insurance, and it is bought separately, as I understand it.

I think some insurance will mandate you get flood insurance from the feds if you are in a zone that floods every so many years. But that would vary state to state.

Do you have actual flood insurance? If not theyre right. If you do then you’ll be fine

our basement flooded last year, when a huge series of storms fucked a lot of people. i called insurance and told them “hey my basement flooded” and they told me they dont cover flooding. apparently i used the wrong word. called back saying my basement was full of water and destroyed my ac and water heater. they saw pics and wrote a check for the highest amount because they didnt have enough people to inspect all the claims coming in.

DONT SAY THE WORD FLOOD. they will not cover you if you do.

our news had a guy who owned a garage talking where they could not get a car out so they lifted it as far as it could go and closed all the doors. The water buckled the door and apparently went high enough to flood the car with two feet of water.

Crazy how the water just sits there like that. Has this happened in this area before? How long do you think it’ll take for the water to clear out?

This is the highest the water has been since 1913. The last major flood in the neighborhood was 1991 and it was several feet less than this. Not necessarily expected, but we do live in a flood pain so…

As cheers_queer has experienced, “flood” means something specific in insurance. It’s wise for everyone to check your specific policies (even if you’re not currently experiencing water in your home). Water that comes up from your pipes/sewer, fresh water that enters your home over land, and salt water can be referred to and covered (or not covered) separately, depending on your specific policy.
