Technology@lemmy.world•If Phones Are Killing Pedestrians, Why Is It Only Happening in America?English
23 hoursSpeed isn’t really a factor here, as many European speed limits are higher than US ones, but there is at leaat some separation between vehicles and pedestrians. It’s not rocket science - vehicles and fleshy water bags don’t mix well

3 daysIt’s quite interesting that even 160 years after slavery became illegal in the US, it’s still practised and now supports the prison industrial complex. Populated primarily with people who wouldve been slaves pre-civil war. Convenient. Racism is alive and well.
US continues its slavery problem just in a different way. Sick bastards.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Powerful politician Andy Burnham enters Parliament after overthrowing the Prime Minister. People are heckling. A man says "He is not the Messiah" English
4 daysI would love to see a poll on who thought the “Rome is saved” or “he’s not the Messiah” comments were cheers or heckles. Brits (and Aussies/kiwis) will know instinctively.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Can things exist without anyone being aware of their existence?English
5 daysBacteria and viruses existed for billions of years before humans ever existed and the majority of the time since. Dinosaurs existed before we were aware of them. Lots of things have.
This isn’t a very well thought out Shower Thought

5 daysDoes the word “B-b-b-baby” give you PTSD flashbacks?
I didn’t have it that bad but I had to spend a whole night as a temp factory worker throwing hay into a machine to shred it into pet bedding and they had Culture Club - Karma Chameleon on repeat for 10hrs.
Liked the song before that night. I refused to work there again after that night.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Saying Primates have "human like qualities" is precisely the inverse of what's going on. Human's do "primate things" not the other way around. [Behaviour]English
6 daysAll primates doing primate things is exactly what you’d expect primates to do

Music@lemmy.world•Can you tell the difference between 320kbps mp3s and lossless?English
7 daysYes, but only if A-B-ing. But the more I listen to lossless, the more I hear.
And it slowly builds a deeper landscape.
Depends if you speak actual English or some bastardised version. 😉
/j but rabbet is the US English version and everyone else calls it a rebate.
Because nobody has answered with the other versions of a router, allow me.
A router (pronounced ROW-ter, like an argument, not as in rowing a boat) is a woodworking tool that digs channels, rebates and moulds on wood. It can be a hand tool (old) or a power tool (modern). The hand tool is primarily a chisel held in a support that is scraped against the wood to make grooves and rebates. The power tool uses a rotating bit that can trim, follow a pattern, groove and rebate or put a moulding on an edge. It is an essential tool for any cabinet maker or kitchen fitter, and very useful for joiners or carpenters too.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•When my cat is somewhere in the house, I don't worry as she's probably snuggled up being sleepy. When my dog is somewhere, I automatically assume she's being naughty or up to no good.English
12 daysAll life comes with damage; physical and/or emotional. How it’s dealt with is what makes the difference. Same for houses and landscapes (I’m a geologist so that last one is my bag).
I’ve rented out my house before and kids did more damage than pets. Far worse is adults that had a “it’s a rental” mentality and no pride in their surroundings

19 daysUSians sounds stupid because most of the world think USians are pretty stupid so it’s got a secondary aspect to it too. Plus, it’s not fair on the other countries in the Americas to be tarred with the USian brush. They have it hard enough and nobody needs that association.

I don’t trust anyone’s opinion unless it’s based on sound evidence and repeatable results and even then, I’ll only trust the opinions of those who are willing to change their opinion based on new knowledge. So, given that, I’ll trust my young kids opinions on things they have researched and learnt about, or a doctor’s opinion if it’s on something they’re knowledgeable about, and my own in areas where I’m an expert.
How MUCH I trust them is a different thing. If it’s something that doesn’t really affect me if it’s not 100% accurate…meh
