1 dayYou don’t need to argue. You just need to accept that every time you do that you put your life, and the lives of the people around you, in danger. And that’s simply a fact.

Technology@lemmy.world•Linux on Older Hardware: The Complete Revival Guide (2026)English
2 daysI have to laugh at the guide calling itself “complete.”
Yes, it’s got a lot of useful info. Yes, someone reading it can learn a lot about what to do with older computers and what to expect from distros.
But there is so much more that the guide doesn’t cover, haha

3 daysThe trouble is, tax rate varies dramatically across the whole U.S. We don’t have a consistent nationwide VAT like much of the rest of the world.

3 daysYeah, that’s exactly it. It doesn’t seem bad. It just seems out of place based on the price point and clientele.

4 daysYeah, but normally the MDM is used to prevent security breaches. Not create them.

Technology@lemmy.world•Federal Workers Can’t Get the White House’s App Off Their PhonesEnglish
4 daysYou’re missing the point. This app is written by outside, for-profit companies who don’t care about data security. And the app is so full of security holes that it means work email and work chat may be skimmed by people outside the organization.
This isn’t a case of “don’t use your work phone for personal stuff.”
This is a case of e.g. “foreign criminal organizations can potentially steal American Social Security databases.”

Technology@lemmy.world•Federal Workers Can’t Get the White House’s App Off Their PhonesEnglish
4 daysThe problem is that it’s at the office in the first place.
It creates a massive hole in IT security and allows attack vectors to get into government networks and files.
It’s like driving your brand new car into a busy part of town, leaving the keys in the ignition, leaving the door open, and stepping away for hours. And then doing it again the next day, and the day after that, even after each car has been stolen.

4 daysI might consider agreeing with you, except the app is full of third-party spyware and for-profit tracking software that’s operated by foreign companies.

4 daysOh absolutely. After so many years since the last numbered release, there’s no way in hell I’d miss Qix III.

7 daysIt’s great when people make it easy to know to block them.
Plastic recycling is mostly a scam pushed through by petrochemical companies. Their goal was to keep making more plastic, so they pushed responsibility out to the public through a massive marketing campaign.
The recycling symbols on plastic, with numbers in them? They don’t actually mean the plastic is recyclable. That’s an indicator of what type of plastic it’s made of. They say the information is to help recyclers, but there’s no way anyone can go through so much plastic and hand sort everything.
Most plastic waste still ends up in the junkyard, incinerated, or in the junkyard and then incinerated.
A lot of “recycled” plastic is recovered through corporate or industrial channels, when there are large volumes of the same type of material available.
