  • No one yells at me to read the friendly manual like the arch forums. The only yelling I see is political stuff. I don’t see the console flame wars. Comments don’t look like youtube of the 2010s and before. Its not 4chan. It doesn’t have much of the smuggery of hacker news. I can block the chapo trap house people. Fediverse and activitypub actually works and we have some admins who seem to care about informing others of bad actors either as individuals to entire instances.

    Lemmy seems good to me!

  • Oh, I’m not judging the actual genre, I’m saying the quality itself. Character depth, subversion of expectation, yet still being predictable to an enjoyable point. The right amount of ups and downs in hopes and fears for protagonists etc. All genre and dressing aside, it’s still good stuff. Again, not masterpieces, but still they at least demonstrate consistently that they care about narrative structure and pacing. Video games these days give zero shits about characters, pacing, emotional up and down beats, a ratio of predictability and subversion of expectation. They often care solely on mechanics and visuals and technical bits and a narrative being bolted on top.

A good video game has a narrative that reinforces the mechanics and themes and the mechanics and themes reinforce the narrative. Very few games do all of that, GTA single player stories at least try and that makes it better than a lot of games these days in terms of a story.

  • Evolution did as much design as my socks design themselves to stay in their drawer. Evolution doesn’t design, it works with what it has and nothing else. It doesn’t even optimize because optimization requires choosing between options with intent. Evolution has zero intentions. Evolution creates un-“optimized” things that go extinct all the time, but it’s not because it “failed” at designing because that implies it “tried” to design, but because it’s not a designer, it can’t design. No design made fish have legs. No design gave elephants their tusks and no design gave flies their wings. Evolution won’t ‘design’ new vertebrae segments, but they still might happen—it just won’t be because of any design.
