Sounds like an animal that would exist in Avatar:TLA, very cool photo!

  • I saw one of those in my garden last year. They are absolutely gorgeous insects.

I came across one of these out with my camera once. A macro lens. It was moving so fast I couldnt tell what it was. So I set my aperture to a high number and a fast shutter and had to make many attempts before I got one half way clear. And what looked back at me was a bit scary.

I had gotten a picture of the face staring right at me. And it looked like a tiny owl. It was so bizarre I was like. This can’t be real. I had not heard of these moths at this time btw.

I took probably another 50 or more and ended up with one pretty good photo.

But it was so creepy to come across a tiny owl flying around and having no idea what was going on.

I’ll share mine too because people here can appreciate how difficult it is to get a photo in focus.

Mine is still a little blurry. But the face was good so I’m happy with it.

It’s a moth, specifically a hawk moth, so named because it hovers like a hummingbird. Latin name is Macroglossum stellatarum.

    • It’s a bug. From here it looks like a bird but most photos definitely look more bug like

  • Is that what they’re called? It took me almost a year to realize they weren’t baby hummingbirds, because we have a plethora of both species around here.

I chose anger in the general direction of a parrot, because they ate one of the moths in front of me at one point, before I realized they were moths.

Heh, I got buzzed by one yesterday. They love the plants in front of my house

We often get them in our weed filled garden. Nippy little buggers.
