Yeah, it’s overpriced. Luckily I have a laundry list of scumbag things done by both Rockstar and the publisher Take-Two so not buying this game is an easy decision
DupaCycki@lemmy.worldEnglish
27 daysPersonally I consider it overpriced in every single country. Video games should not cost this much.
iamthetot@piefed.caEnglish
26 daysCould you elaborate on why you think it shouldn’t cost that much?
Also, just to be clear, I am not planning to buy it at full price, at release, or maybe even ever.
DupaCycki@lemmy.worldEnglish
26 daysIn my country, GTA 6 (like most AAA games), costs about 10% of an average person’s post-tax monthly income. These games just don’t have anything to warrant that kind of price tag in my opinion.
Especially when fantastic indie games release at a fraction of that price. Sure, games like GTA 6 were made by thousands of people over several years, but so what? If the end result is mediocre, it doesn’t matter how expensive it was to make.
- Arcane2077@sh.itjust.worksEnglish27 days
Reminder to everyone that GTAVI costs $100, and you get some of it disabled in the $80 version
- nyctre@piefed.socialEnglish27 days
I’m not gonna buy either because fuck rockstar, but let’s be honest. The game is 80. The other 20 is just for some cosmetics.
- Arcane2077@sh.itjust.worksEnglish26 days
Idk if I would call missions and characters on a single-player game “cosmetic”
- nyctre@piefed.socialEnglish26 days
“Track down a variety of abandoned classic and work-in-progress project cars and revitalise them to their former glory in this special commission from eccentric collector and local fixer, Wyman. Restore these and make them your own, including four vehicles that are only available in the Ultimate Edition.”
So you get 4 extra cars in ultimate. I’d hardly call those missions, but meh.
The rest is just other vehicles, skins, tattoos, etc.
Also "PTT Youngin$ Compound and Scores
One of Leonida’s loudest and most socially active gangs, the PTT Youngin$ grow premium hydroponics in places you’d least expect. Find a way to raid the PTT Youngin$ Illegal Goods Store in Southside Vice City and escape safely to score some special items and distinct contraband. "
Sort of sounds like a mission as well, but in the style of those "? " on the map in open world games that take 5 mins at max.
- Guitar@lemmy.worldEnglish26 days
From what I understand, it provides access to a handful of shops in game. This is where you get the clothes/tattoos/etc. The shops are present in the $80 version, but you can only access them after paying extra. I would absolutely call that locking content behind a paywall.
- nyctre@piefed.socialEnglish26 days
You go in once, you spend a minute to pick your fav hairstyle (which might not even be one of the exclusive ones) and then you never go in again. You do you, but I personally don’t consider that content. It doesn’t really change the experience of the game.
Even if we do consider it content for the sake of the argument, it’s what… an hour of content? That’s still silly to get upset over when you pay an extra 25% for it.
100 hours of content for 80€ vs 101 hours of content for 100€.
- Guitar@lemmy.worldEnglish26 days
But that’s just it, why the hell did it become okay to rip out an hour of content from a game and sell it for a quarter of the price on top of the game? It doesn’t really matter if its small or large, it’s scummy as hell. I’m not gonna make any excuses for it. Shit like that, among all the other terrible shit about Rockstar, is why I will not be buying this game.
- nyctre@piefed.socialEnglish26 days
Fair enough. But I do wonder. If they only had the standard version for sale and then 3-6 months later they’d put all the ultimate edition stuff for sale as a dlc, would you still call it scummy?
ampersandrew@lemmy.worldEnglish
27 daysOr, alternatively, it’s $80, but they’ll let you plus it up with some bullshit that doesn’t matter for $20.
- Arcane2077@sh.itjust.worksEnglish26 days
Idk if I would call missions and characters on a single-player game “some bullshit that doesn’t matter”
ampersandrew@lemmy.worldEnglish
26 daysOh, you’ve never seen the throwaway bonus missions on a game SKU before? Truthfully, no one knows but Rockstar how substantive that extra stuff is. But my gut and past experience tells me that if it was actually worth seeing, they wouldn’t have padded out the list with a bunch of variations on guns and cars, of which there will be many even in the base game, because it’s Grand Theft Auto. The missions that we know about, which you have to read on one or two select pages but they’re not present on others, is some kind of mission around collecting cars for some fence; I’m not losing sleep over not having that and keeping an extra $20 in my pocket.
- Arcane2077@sh.itjust.worksEnglish26 days
Tell yourself whatever you like, but it’s kind of sad that after learning that it’s not what you thought it was, you’ve doubled down
- Arcane2077@sh.itjust.worksEnglish26 days
Oops, I thought you read what you’ve been writing. Won’t happen again
- yesman@lemmy.worldEnglish27 days
I will not pay more than $30 for a game. That means I wait for AAA games, usually about 5 years. By then they’ll be optimized, patched, and all the DLC will be included.
garretble@lemmy.worldEnglish
26 daysI plan on doing what I did for GTAV: wait ten years for it to be free on Epic or whatever, play it, then go “huh, yeah I guess that was alright” and never think about it again.
- 26 days
Rockstar arbitrarily banned Linux players from GTA Online for no reason so they get absolutely nothing from me ever again.
- PonyOfWar@pawb.socialEnglish27 days
Take a look at the exchange rate of the Yen compared to the Euro over the last 10 years and it should be clear why the Japanese prize is “cheap”. The Yen has lost a lot of its value, while Japanese wages haven’t risen accordingly. So prizing the game at an equivalent prize to EU or US would mean that the game would simply be unaffordable to Japanese people.
tigeruppercut@lemmy.zipEnglish
26 daysYeah the yen is terrible right now and there’s nothing the government is currently doing to fix it, unless stoking anti-immigrant sentiment counts.
- ms.lane@lemmy.worldEnglish26 days
So then why is it an extra $52 in Australia?
AUD has lost ~50% of its value and we haven’t seen pay rises in a decade here…
- BaraCoded@literature.cafeEnglish26 days
Overpriced and overhyped, plus they mistreat their workforce. No money for these douches.

26 daysUS has added sales tax
I have never paid a cent in sales tax on digital goods, and I do not live in a state without sales tax. Steam doesn’t charge tax, niether does PSN. Price says $79.99, you pay exactly $79.99.
It’s still overpriced and may actually be the worst GTA in history.
- creamfresh@lemmy.worldEnglish26 days
I don’t think Steam doesn’t pay sales tax. It’s probably just included in the final amount.
- AliasVortex@lemmy.worldEnglish26 days
Steam absolutely charges sale tax in addition to the base price in my area (I think my state passed a law some 10 years ago to capture lost tax revenue from online sales).
- Ludicrous0251@piefed.zipEnglish26 days
Assuming they flood it with MTX, spyware, and unnecessary online connectivity, I value it at approx. -$100 (USD, feel free to convert that to your currency of choice.)
Someone would have pay me $100 to install it, and even then I can’t promise I’d play it much. So yes, I do think it’s overpriced, by ~$200
- caut_R@lemmy.worldEnglish26 days
Do I think it‘s objectively overpriced? No, it‘s the biggest game on the planet that will sell stupid amounts almost no matter what they do. I‘m actually surprised it‘s not 99.99
Do I think it‘s subjectively overpriced? Absolutely. I‘m not paying more than like 25ish bucks for a game. The games I paid more for (mostly launch games) I’ve come to regret the majority of. They mostly just sit in my library and become part of the already huge backlog.
- Visstix@lemmy.worldEnglish26 days
They might as well make it free to play. They made most of their money on “micro” transactions.
I ain’t playing it either way.
ampersandrew@lemmy.worldEnglish
27 daysIt’s worth what someone is willing to pay. I have paid north of $100 USD for new video games before. For what’s different between those two versions of GTA6, I probably would have been just fine on the $80 version and felt it was worth the money, as the $20 more expensive version doesn’t seem to offer much of value to me, but that’s if it came out on PC in the same calendar year. By December, all of the cultural zeitgeist around the game will be discussed to death on end-of-year gaming podcasts, and by the time it comes to PC, it will be long past spoiler discussions and that cultural moment. So by then, I don’t know what I’ll be willing to pay, but it will be far less than $80.
- 27 days
What new video game have you paid north of $100 for? Was it a deluxe version or something?
- nyctre@piefed.socialEnglish27 days
Probably talking about online stuff with mtx or just games with a subscription.
ampersandrew@lemmy.worldEnglish
27 daysYeah, deluxe versions of stuff like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Borderlands.
dan1101@lemmy.worldEnglish
26 daysWe don’t even know how it plays yet. We know almost nothing.
If it’s a typical GTA game, yes over priced.
If it does something amazing maybe the price is justified. But I can’t think of many games that would qualify.
samus12345@sh.itjust.worksEnglish
26 daysYes, in every country. But they’ll make billions all the same.
