What books are your favourite and what are you reading now?

I just finished Alien Clay by Adrian Tchaikovsky, it was fantastic. The big twist isn’t really a surprise if you’ve read his other works, but it’s really well done here.

I like the funny ones. Like good omens. Or the Martian.

Currently I’m reading “what if?” By Xkcd

R. D. Laing, A Divided Self. This book analizes schizophrenia not as a brain malfunction, but as a psychological strategy existentially vulnerable people adopt. It can teach everyone a lot as we all struggle from the same problems but much more superficially

Right now I’m reading Neocolonialism, the Last Stage of Imperialism by Kwame Nkrumah. It’s a really good expansion of Lenin’s work on Imperialism as a stage in capitalism. Nkrumah was coup’d one year after its publishing with support from the US.

As for favorites, I really love both Piranesi and Roadside Picnic! The former is just a really fun mystery with a good deal of whimsy, the latter is excellent sci-fi.

The Stand (by King), The Stormlight Archive (by Brandon Sanderson), and The Player Of Games by Ian M. Banks are excellent.

I also liked Yesteryear by Caro Burke, but it gave off similar vibes to the video game called “Omori” and the nonfiction book called Educated by Tara Westover. All three are not happy stories, lol.

I’m currently reading through the Stormlight Archive series and I’m currently waiting on copies of the third book to become available at the library. It can’t come soon enough!

Edit: I’ve also read through a number of books on diseases and Ebola just before the current outbreak happened. If you like virology and that sort of thing, lmk :)

The First Law series by Abercrombie, the Mercy Thompson series by Briggs, the Monstrous series by Mayne.

Fantasy and urban fantasy are my favorites. Currently reading This World Won’t Kill Me by Ilona Andrews. It’s not as good as the raves have said it would be, but I’m only a quarter in. They are exceptional writers so I expect to be wowed by the end.

I’m constantly reading, so favorites are kinda hard to nail down. I’d have to do it by category or something.

I just recently finished Liberal Fascisms by Slavoj Zizek. It’s a collection of essays. He’s an excellent writer and is always enjoyable.

I just started Fatal Purity: Robespierre and the French Revolution by Ruth Scurr. So far it seems pretty interesting.

The only books I keep returning to are adult children of emotionally immature parents (on audio) and the loving parent guidebook (workbook). I just finished doing the workbook. No other books have changed my life.

Now that I’m retired, I’m rediscovering hard science fiction. Currently reading Songs Of Distant Earth by Clarke.
