I can’t understand how people use any platforms with ads. Any ads are bad, but audio/video ads are the worst. I refuse to use any platform that tries to hijack my attention like that.
I grew up with nearly every stage and major leap of our modern tech. I saw dialup internet and windows 95 and the major shift to XP. I had an original Nintendo and gameboy, and got to witness the evolution to handheld and 3D gaming. I had a flip phone with T9 texting, and saw the first smartphones come about. For me, tech peaked in like 2012, and hasn’t done anything worthwhile or innovative since, with the exception of the steamdeck. The internet has only gotten shittier since, cell phones and PCs have only gotten more expensive and complex, without any major increase in capability. Sure they’re more powerful, but they can’t really do anything new, and all software has only gotten shittier and less efficient. It’s honestly depressing to think about how much hope I had for the tech space in the 2000s and how far we’ve fallen since then.
People avoiding updating windows because of how long it takes your machine out of commission for and how opaque the process is has been a meme since like Windows XP. It’s never five minutes. Plus the future hours saved not having to deal with windows bullshit.
I don’t care how adept you are at reading an analog clock, there’s no way it’s faster than simply reading a (max) 4 digit number unless you have some massive dyslexia.
But Goldberg emulator has been widely and easily available basically forever and they’ve done nothing to try to stop people from using it or shutting it down. People are also able to add pirated games to their steam library and run them without fear of banning or retaliation on platforms like SteamOS or the steamdeck. Without being able to launch (pirated) games from within steam, using proton or gaming on Linux at all would be much harder.
People aren’t saying AI is going to disappear, although that wouldn’t be a bad thing imo. When people talk about an AI crash they’re talking about the trillions in investments by the major companies that have been operating at a loss and have no monetization plan that could feasibly recoup even a fraction of that amount. Open source models are nearly as good as the big guys now, and nobody is going to pay hundreds or thousands a month just to keep using chatgpt or Gemini.
