Wow, glad we got that cleared up in 2026.

The “everything causes autism” groupthink really downplays and distracts from the long-standing but poorly-communicated fact that circumcision offers no health benefit that regular bathing won’t cure.

Its crazy to me that the ONLY serious reason anyone gives for why they get babies circumcised is

“I don’t wanna tell my child how to clean their penis”

What a fucking shame. The child rearing fans really wanna make a whole child and then pay a doctor to mutilate them instead of acknowledge they have genitals!

I’d assume it’s more like they don’t want to have to explain to their kid why their penis doesn’t look at all like Daddy’s. Not that it’s a much better reason, though. Curious how many non-circumcised fathers opt for their kids to be circumcised.

No if you ask almost every time they will site “hygiene issues”

Or they will say “women prefer it” or something insane.

And that’s assuming they don’t cite religion which is crazy in the US because Christianity does not in any way require it at its core.

it’s a holdover from when Jews required all Christians (heretics) have their genitalia mutilated for identification purposes.

Hey look… Israel hold’s America’s leash in the same way that a dog owner holds the leash of a bitch in heat…

And hey look… Israel loves mutilating genitalia. it’s their 3rd favorite pastime right behind raping children (#1) and butchering Palestinians (#2).

That’s insane fiction lmao where did you hear this? Jews have always been a minority so the idea that they’re making all the rules is out to lunch haha.

Jews circumsize as an homage to a story in the Bible. It’s supposed to represent a covenant with God.

Judaism doesn’t view other religions as inferior or wrong. Just different. This is actually a neo-nazi trope used by the American KKK and other ideologicalically tangential groups to get more people to be sus about Jews.

The reason North Americans largely circumsize (or used to ) is due to evangelical control and fear of masturbation. It was believed that removing foreskin would limit masturbation (it doesn’t). Go look into Kellog and circumcision.

You’re conflating Israel’s war crimes with Judaism and spouting Nazi-ajacent rhetoric whether your aware of it or not.

For a serious answer: Once my son is old enough to start washing himself I’ll need to show him how to shower. Easiest way to do that, as my dad did with me and his likely did with him, is to shower together. You don’t just drop them in and wish them well, proper hygiene is taught.

Circumcision offers no actual benefit, yet carries the risk of life changing consequences. It’s genital mutilation.

And even if they didn’t see it as mutilation, what kind of an idiot decides that the first thing they need to give their baby is elective cosmetic surgery?

I’m confused… How does regular bathing reduce the spread of HIV and other STIs? How does it remove phimosis?

I’m definitely not saying that the procedure is the right thing to do for infants, but factually there absolutely are medical uses and upsides for some people.

Edit: Downvotes don’t make me incorrect. Use your words. Talk with me like a person. I’m open to being wrong.

No, but that’s what you have condoms for. Much, much more effective.

Oh definitely! Except condoms are not really readily available in a lot of places (for example, parts of Africa) which is where it happens frequently and is a permanent boost. A 30% reduction in transmission is significant.

You don’t have to like it, but I’m factually correct and the science backs me up. See Wikipedia for a primer.

Wikipedia has links to one study. I used to work in the HIV field, there are levels of nuance the west doesn’t understand about sex in Africa. One example is the common practice of vaginal drying. The other is the lack of any hygiene training in some regions of the continent.

The last consideration is evolution, there are reasons why foreskins evolved.

                                                                13 days

Absolutely. There are some truly weird attitudes that are deeply unscientific about this stuff. Even my wife didn’t understand it when we first discussed it. We don’t have any sons, but even if we did I wouldn’t have had them circumcised unless they had a medical issue that required it. And yes that is true even though I am circumcised. No, I don’t care about making any dicks look like mine. That’s fucking weird.

It is completely unnecessary because I live in a place with readily available contraception, low rates of STIs, and other factors.

Am I mad that I was circumcised? No. Am I proud? No. It just is. I don’t understand attitudes about it. Everything is a small trade-off in life. I appreciate the plusses that I gained from it, and don’t really know or care about the minuses because they were never a part of my life.

I have had compliments on it explicitly because I was circumcised and women expressed relief about it. I’ve also been told it looks nicer just hanging there. One lady I used to date would complain about her ex incessantly because he wasn’t exactly the cleanest dude, and when combined with his lack of circumcision, he was kind of gross and you can use your imagination as to what that entailed.

On the other side, my best friend in high school had his circumcision fucked up and every time he got an erection, it hurt because it was done incorrectly and caused one side to “pull” wrong.

I’ve also had a septoplasty later in life so I could breathe better. This argument that you see above would be like going online and telling people that there is a medical use for it, but they come back and start screaming at you in freaked out panicked tones and assume you’re meaning it’s for everyone. It isn’t, but to deny that there is a medical use is actively wrong and harmful.

                                                                  • alsimoneau@lemmy.caEnglish

These aren’t studies from the '70s using outdated methodologies or something. It doesn’t nullify the science. They’re both seemingly saying somewhat opposite things but that doesn’t mean that one is outwardly completely wrong, it means at best the science is still out and at worst it depends on specifics of the situation.

And yeah, it would be great if they would provide full health care for everyone, but in people in war torn parts of Africa it’s not really an option because the governments aren’t stable or don’t care. I also wish proper contraception was available everywhere for free, but it isn’t. And even if it were, you can’t tell me that you believe that every person would use it 100% of the time.

So again, every time I see this it’s simply people who don’t like circumcision getting mad that there may, in fact, be a functional use for it somewhere and it’s not just people trying to get their kids dick to look like their dick. That’s such a weird and disturbing dodge.

                                                                            • SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.caEnglish

Same thing with other body parts like adenoids, wisdom teeth, and the gallbladder. It’s not like they have no purpose, but taking them out can fix or avoid medical issues. Reading the medical papers, it seems it is removed because it is the first thing to rip during sexual intercourse, and as we all know from grade school, exchanging blood is one of the fastest way to get STIs or other diseases.

Obviously it is also the best way to cure phimosis which is something my uncle had repaired this way when he was 20 something.

Don’t mix up circumcision with it please. They are not the same. I have yet to see a justification for removing anyone’s clitoris that isn’t some crazy religious bullshit that has no basis in scientific fact at all.

It is a practice which is common in certain cultures and religions. I did not have my children circumcised, not that I even thought about it, but I don’t see how the practice has to be condemned in any way.

It removes a piece of skin from the body, sure. I would not equate that to taking away somebody’s arm. People live their life happily without problems if they are circumcised.

I guess maybe sexual pleasure may be affected? I do not know. I have met plenty people who were circumcised and they never complained about that. After all the nice part in having sex is the connection with the other person.

Regarding the fact that it is protective, sure it is. But I doubt that kind of protection is really needed nowadays when we wear underwear, trousers and have shower almost every day.

Not that I appreciate the practice itself: I don’t really see the point; but I also see no reason to condemn it.

Do many circumcised persons want to revert the operation? I have never heard about that.

As someone circumcised after their first sexual experience, the difference is not comparable. While yes, you can wear a cock ring to immobilize the foreskin to simulate the loss of gliding action, the sensations brought about from tissue that is removed in circumcision makes that simulation a still better experience than the circumcised experience.

All that said, the level of sensitivity declines as you age after circumcision because the head of the penis will generate a thick layer of keratin in response to external friction that wouldn’t occur if the penis was covered by foreskin, much like a callous that develops on your feet or hands from over-manipulation/exposure to stress. Many accounts of adult circumcision cases fail to follow up with patients as they age and the keratin layer develops over time.

My penis was incredibly sensitive feeling following circumcision, but a year later it was dull feeling. 5 years or more later it was numb to sensations of temperature and light touch.

Now, that said, I’ve been undergoing circumcision reversal, and I’m about half way restored. The only parts that have improved are the keratin layer (gone now, temperature and light touch are restored slightly), and the gliding motion.

                                                                                                • the feeling in the rigid band? Gone

(Although skin tensing still occurs when I’m cold, it’s not sufficient to keep the skin forward, and the muscle is gone, so the skin doesn’t collect forward by itself)
