I decided to turn one of my older singleplayer worlds that I didn’t originally play on for long into my forever world. It was random seed, but I chose it because it had nice terrain.
Mostly it’s a solo adventure, but occasionally I’ll host it as a server and do a session or tour with a friend.
I never reset chunks, but I’m careful about the areas I explore to save space for new update content.
I don’t use vanilla-incompatible mods. When Mojang releases an update I want to be able to update my world without having to wait on mods to update to the new version. I’ve only created and added one datapack to delete my items and xp when I die.
I play on hard mode with no gamerule alterations.
I do impose a few rules on myself:
I’ve been playing on this world on and off for 5 years now. Its nice to be able to take a break for weeks or even months and still have everything exactly where I left off.
It’s a random world, no mods initially, now it’s shaders, inventory handlers
Hard difficulty, no rule changes.
I started it some time in 2015. Spawn is on an island, from one end of the island you can listen to the local ocean monument’s guardians killing squid. I trim the world’s chunks outside the local area before updates
I started a hardcore world at the same time, and that game is now really hard to lose, with 1.16 god armour
Closest thing to a forever world I did was in the middle of beta, back when biomes were more the product of smoothly varying numbers than hard-coded distinct regions with borders. Random seed, medium difficulty, solo, no mods, and gamerules weren’t a thing. But it’s long lost now.
My forever world didn’t happen until I paid for a realm. Best 8 bucks a month I can spend. We have a massive cave system, an automatic item sorter, huge castle, built to scale Wrigley Field, a Mute City ice boat track, and more. And it’s just really two of us. Been probably 3 years or so.
I started playing in 2010, but this is my first forever world. I intend on keeping the realm alive as long as Microslop allows it.
FYI, if you ever find yourself able to host your own server, it is possible to download your world from the realm and host it yourself without the monthly fees. It’s nice to have the peace of mind that the data is in your own hands.

There is one caveat, that might bite an inexperienced person moving a world from a realm to dedicated hosting.
Marketplace add-ons are encrypted and cannot be directly transferred over. Many add-ons are available in both marketplace and other environments (Curse forge for example), but some of the most popular or obscure ones might not be (e.g. BOP: One of the best biomes add-ons, arguably the best on Bedrock, but only the Java version is available on Curse, its Bedrock version is marketplace only).
So depending on how the realm is set up and which add-ons it has running, it’s some extra work to either locate suitable replacements, start a private port/fork, or make replacements from scratch.

Random AFAIK, it may have had a few random generations before it was “good” but it definitely wasn’t selected by seed.

We haven’t yet. I’m not completely against the idea. We probably will at some point.

3ish years? People play in bursts for a month or so. At the moment no one has really played in a few months.
Long ago towards the beginning of our relationship, my wife and I had a world in which we found a mushroom island and terraformed it into a lush green place with 2x2 spruce trees.
It was a random seed, but we did look up where the island was. I’ve done some work to trim the chunks, since the latest update handles chunk borders really well.
It has not mods, but has had data packs, most of which are probably broken. The biggest of which is a hammer data pack that let’s you break a 3x3 of blocks. The rest are mostly VanillaTweaks.
I’m pretty sure it was set to normal for villager conversions.
We have phantom spawning off, and 1 player sleeping.
It’s been running for about 5 years with probably a 3 year gap.
