Climate change is nothing but alarmism, guys. Just some conspiracy to keep us all “in check”.

Oh that? Oh I remember when we had that in the 80s. Nothing new. Nothing new at all.

I traveled through France via train and this is way WAY scarier when you go through. This aerial view is still abstract, actually seeing it, kilometer and kilometer through the entire country is deeply unsettling. This is the new normal and it is catastrophic.

I live close to the french border and while it’s really bad here - our forests already switched to autumn mode due to heat stress and dryness - it’s much, much worse once you drive around an hour west.

unsettling is an understatement. I get the feeling people are avoiding the topic - not denying - but avoiding it, so they don’t have switch into full panic mode.

We just need to get some more ice on a nearby comet or something, thus solving the problem once and for all.

So I’m from northern Italy and I remember travelling to southern years for the first time over 20 years ago and noticing how dry and yellow everything looked in the summer, which was unusual for someone used to green vegetation even at the peak of August.

Guess what it looks like this year here in the North? “Summer’s always been hot, you were just younger” my ass.

More than just France. I went to Ireland this summer, and I have been several times before. In a country that is normally cloudy and rainy, it was sunny and bright. It didn’t rain for the 10 days I was there. That sounds nice, but everything was dried up, it was sad. What is normally a drive through the lush and green countryside, was a drive through the brown and dry midlands. Not seeing those rolling hills of emerald green really bummed me out.

Although snow in winter in Ireland is rare, it used to be much colder. Over 15 years ago, my mates and I would walk in mornings to school and we would slip on frozen footpaths during winter. Now, the winters just tend to be warmer with more rain. Roads don’t really get frozen anymore apart from the rare snow events that happen every couple of years. The north gets more snow but anecdotally it is getting lesser and lesser over the years.

If your response to climate change is to shame ordinary people for occasionally getting on an airplane while billionaires take private jets, oil companies fight renewable energy, and massive corporations produce pollution on a scale no individual could dream of matching, then you’re aiming your anger in the wrong direction.

My “once every few years” flight is a rounding error. Telling regular people they shouldn’t travel, see family, or enjoy their lives because corporations and the ultra rich have spent decades wrecking the climate isn’t environmentalism. It’s just shifting responsibility onto the people with the least power to fix the problem.

It’s a balance of multiple competing ones. Climate change is affecting a lot of those, at the same time. It’s hard to predict which way things will tip. E.g. if the golf stream fails, then we could get FAR colder winters.

Some of the new potential balances are more unpleasant/annoying, others are more deadly.

Short enough that us and our children will take the brunt of it. But long enough that a lot of leaders won’t care yet, they won’t live to see it.
