28 daysPredictable and self inflicted. You don’t bring Reddit style tactics to a group that largely fled them and not face blowback.
- BillyClark@piefed.socialEnglish27 days
It’s just shocking that they’d create a front end that filters out a bunch of stuff without telling the user. To me, that’s not the job of a front end client program. If they want to add additional filtering over the backend, it needs to be directed by the user or at least specifically approved by the user.
Eldritch@piefed.worldEnglish
27 daysYes if this had been opt-in. Something that the user had to explicitly enable it. And was thoroughly explained. The worst anyone would have to say about them is that they were overly opinionated. But no one would care beyond that. The reason it’s a big thing. It is the way it was hidden and enabled by default. It 100% is a mess of their own making.
- femtek@lemmy.blahaj.zoneEnglish27 days
Yeah, I use blocklists on bluesky but I have to enable them. That way if I can’t see someone’s post I know it’s not a bug and I can change it myself.
Ricky Rigatoni@piefed.zipEnglish
27 daysIf he was as proud and confident in his choices as he claims to be he would have advertised it as a feature to get more users.
deegeese@sopuli.xyzEnglish
27 daysThey wanted to be a self appointed moral guardian for all of Lemmy but are themselves immortal because they intentionally hid that they were censoring anyone.
Eldritch@piefed.worldEnglish
27 daysFunnily enough it does also work. This will likely be what most people remember them for lol. And it was all their own doing
- AbidanYre@lemmy.worldEnglish27 days
Bunch of instance admins running around cutting each other’s heads off until there’s only one left.
- lokalhorst@feddit.orgEnglish28 days
They obviously have mental problems and it would be sad if there wasn’t the DDOS, which is just infuriating.
I give them one point though:
harassing messages, death threats, and threats of doxxing
We all know the internet can be a harsh place, but this is never okay, no matter against whom. They can fuck of, we can make fun of them, but harassing someone personally and threatening them is just wrong.
- Agrivar@lemmy.worldEnglish27 days
But, given all the other behaviours, what’s to say the “harassing messages, death threats, and threats of doxxing” even happened? Could just as easily be crocodile tears.
- CosmoNova@lemmy.worldEnglish27 days
Yup. Obviously that person is insanely thin skinned and tried to deceive people before which has lead to all this drama in the first place. Shitty behavior if it happened but can we be sure it actually did?
Because the backlash from the community sure might look like senseless bullying to the receiver if you lack any self awareness and refuse to take responsibility for your actions.
For all we know they might just blow this out of proportion. They‘re known to overreact after all.
deegeese@sopuli.xyzEnglish
27 daysI call BS. They never showed any death threats or doxxing, but they did show they were incapable of mature behavior.
Dont spare sympathy for a crybaby liar.
- lokalhorst@feddit.orgEnglish27 days
Nah, we all know the internet and this is absolutely plausible and even likely. This is not about sympathy, but about a statement against hate. Even if OP is lying, I stand with what I said.
- 27 days
I’m not saying it didn’t happen, but given the rest of the message, I have trouble taking it on good faith.
- stoly@lemmy.worldEnglish27 days
That was my take. Yes, it could well have happened, but can we really trust what someone like that says?
- [object Object]@lemmy.caEnglish27 days
This is censorship manifest!
I think most people would have been fine with like a ublock style collection blocklists they could enable or disable and subscribe to, the problem was hiding it and doing it unilaterally.
Putting in a DDOS tool is just another signal this person isn’t mature enough to be trusted with your computer.
Coelacanth@feddit.nuEnglish
27 daysYes, I believe Bluesky does exactly that - custom blocklists you can subscribe to. It would actually be a very useful feature.
- prole@lemmy.blahaj.zoneEnglish26 days
This is censorship manifest!
What is the charge, causing a DDOS? A succulent Chinese DDOS?
- Ghoelian@piefed.socialEnglish26 days
tl;dr (also didn’t really see an explanation I’m the linked comments):
Tesseract dev hid a blocklist (compressed + base64 encoded iirc) of users and communities that should never be shown, sneakily inserted in an otherwise irrelevant commit.
There were a lot of communities/people on that list that didn’t make a whole lot of sense, but the main issue is that it was a static list you (as the person hosting the front-end) have to opt out of.
db0 figured this out when he updated tesseract and suddenly no local posts appeared (the db0 instance is on the list).
- HubertManne@piefed.socialEnglish27 days
wow. guess he wanted to make sure everyone realized how disengenous he was.
- CrypticCoffee@lemmy.mlEnglish28 days
It seems everyone is the problem but them.
A distinct lack of self-awareness and a huge pile of narcissism.
- dil@lemmy.zipEnglish27 days
Man is acting like the reddit devs, there is a reason you never see fuck spez or anyone complaining about the ceos/founders anymore, searching fuck spez will only show you stuff from 2023, like suddenly no one has any issue with him
- AbidanYre@lemmy.worldEnglish27 days
To be fair, anyone who would post “fuck spez” has probably left by now.
- kreskin@lemmy.worldEnglish26 days
He retired an account name. People like him dont just leave, they have to be tossed out on their ass.
- 27 days
Well, I’m not gonna click the link if it’ll participate in a DDoS attack.
- 27 days
Not on my work computer, my company doesn’t let us run Ublock Origin or anything like that.
- StaticFalconar@lemmy.worldEnglish27 days
Isnt the entire point of lemmy designed to be able to go around this problem?
ExtremeDullard@piefed.socialEnglish
27 daysWell, it kind of did: the guy is gone and life goes on without him.
- lambalicious@lemmy.sdf.orgEnglish27 days
Okay, real time.
Who’s more pathetic, AdmiralPatrick or Donald Trump?
ExtremeDullard@piefed.socialEnglish
27 daysI’ll take AdmiralPatrick anyday: one is a sad bitter passive-aggressive opensource developer in his basement, the other is a raging fascist with a nuclear button.
- 27 days
AdmiralPatrick is just some bigoted asshat having a public crash out and trying to DDOS a Lemmy instance. Donald Trump is leader of the
state. As far as I’m aware, AdmiralPatrick is responsible for zero deaths. Trump is responsible for millions.Trump is an unforgivable monster, and I honestly don’t know how you could consider AdmiralPatrick comparable to Trump.
- lambalicious@lemmy.sdf.orgEnglish27 days
, and I honestly don’t know how you could consider AdmiralPatrick comparable to Trump.
In as much as I care to compare them, by the metric I posted above: patheticness.
- 27 days
Okay: still no. Trump is more pathetic by a country mile for the ballroom alone.
But Trump’s not only known, or even primarily known, for being pathetic; he is a rapist, murderer, genocider, colonizer, and basically every other way of being monstrous invented by mankind. And you’re kinda showing your ass when you say that “patheticness” is the way you want to compare Trump to other people.
- lambalicious@lemmy.sdf.orgEnglish26 days
You are severely overreading in an attempt to feel offended. Dude, that “culture” went out of vogue in 2019.
I said patheticness is the metric I’m comparing them in as much as I care to. In a subthread about, quite visibly and specifically, comparing them in terms of patheticness.
I’m not doubting Trump is more of a rapist and more of a genocider. Go look at my history, I’m about as critical of him as I like to. But I’m also not saying the List Guy would be somehow exempt from doing such things also if he had access to the same kind of overreach.
I’m not showing my ass. You are smelling yours, and blaming someone else when you find out it stinks.
